Junior middleweight Joey Spencer, and his handlers, are applying pressure on Australian superstar Tim Tszyu to make much needed changes with the lineup of judges for their upcoming fight this weekend.
According to Fox Sports Australia, Spencer and his handlers have threatened to withdraw from the fight over three local judges being assigned to the contest - which takes place at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.
Tszyu is looking to bounce back after suffering back to back defeats.
Spencer’s father and head coach Jason indicates that the official contract states that the scheduled bout would have only one Australian and two international judges.
“I’ve let my team know my position … and I’ve put everything in their hands now," Spencer said. “Tim has to ask himself if he wants Sunday’s fight to be fair. Because at the end of the day, we had an agreement – I was promised there would be two independent judges. And if it were me with the big name here in Australia, with that position of power, I’d be doing everything I could to make some noise and figure this out.
“And I hope they do. Because this isn’t the way you do things. And it’s not a small issue. Whatever they’ve asked me to do so far, I’ve done it. I’ve prepared well. I’ve done the media, helped promote the fight … and all I’m asking is that I get a fair shot in return. Get what I’ve been promised.”
Spencer explains that the judges were a mix of local and international officials for Tszyu's past bouts with Tony Harrison and Brian Mendoza.
“So it’s really disappointing that this is even now an issue,” Spencer said. “It shouldn’t be. Because when you’re told how the judging has been a certain way for one fight, then this fight and now we get out here and it’s not going to be the case … it’s upsetting from a moral standpoint. And if it wasn’t something people could promise me, then it should never have been promised. It feels like I’m being taken advantage of.
“When I was offered to come out here and fight Tim Tszyu, that was the only caveat I had. I wanted to ensure I got a fair shake. I’m not coming here to collect a paycheque or have the opportunity just to be in the ring with Tim … I’m coming here to win. And if it goes to the judges, I want to make sure there are two neutral judges there. I’m OK with one Australian judge. But I want to have a couple of non partisan judges. It’s a big deal for me.”
