After coming up short against Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury seemingly had enough.
The despondent big man sauntered to his locker room, looked himself in the mirror, and came to the conclusion that, if he wasn’t going to be the top dog, then he was simply done with the sport of boxing. But, Fury has done this before. Time and time again, he's thrown the retirement word around, only to fight soon after.
By and large, the boxing world finds it hard to believe that The Ring’s No. 1 ranked contender won’t fight again. Amongst that skeptical group, is Joe Joyce.
“I’m sure he’ll get bored and come back,” said Joyce during an interview with FightHub TV.
For the most part, Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) has swapped fists with most of the division’s top names. From back-and-forth wars with Deontay Wilder and Derek Chisora, to dull matchups against Dillian Whyte and Wladimir Klitschko, Fury has faced them all. Joyce though, has never gotten his chance.
Things haven't been pretty for Joyce as of late. After looking like a true top contender for years, his stock is at an all-time low. Following back-to-back losses to Zhilei Zhang, Joyce (16-3, 15 KOs) recently lost another tough fight, this time against Derek Chisora.
Nevertheless, the former Olympic silver medalist is determined to turn things around. He’s scheduled to return to the ring on March 1st against Patrick Korte. Joyce’s team, while they might not admit it, is completely overlooking Korte as he’s already scheduled his following bout, a 12-round showdown against Dillian Whyte one month later.
It’s a simple thought process for Joyce, get active. Stringing together consecutive victories could grab the attention of one of the division's belt holders, or better yet, Fury. If the first-ballot Hall of Famer decides that he isn’t quite done with the sport, Joyce will be waiting in front of the line to welcome him back.
“I’ll fight him if he wants it.”
