The fall of
Joseph Diaz was long and unexpected.
After beating Tevin Farmer for the IBF super featherweight title in January 2020, Diaz was stripped of his belt roughly a year later because of his failure to make weight. From 2021 to present day, his career sank lower and lower.
Losses to Devin Haney, William Zepeda and Oscar Duarte were understandable, but coming up short against Abraham Montoya, Mercito Gesta and Jesus Antonio Perez Campos was inexcusable.
Nowadays, however, things have gotten better. Although he’s just 1-1 in 2025,
with his latest loss coming against Regis Prograis, Diaz (34-8-1, 15 KOs) is feeling good about himself. While things didn’t go according to plan last month against Prograis, he likes the direction his career is going.
“It was a really great performance,” Diaz told FightHype.com. “I feel like I did a really good job. I’m feeling like myself again. The last couple of years, I was dealing with a lot emotionally. I’m back to where I need to be.”
In terms of form,
Schofield, arguably, hasn't looked better. The highly ranked lightweight is fresh off a first-round stoppage of Farmer on June 28 in Anaheim, California.
Diaz, though, isn’t shaking in his boots. He maintains if their matchup had taken place a few years ago, Schofield would’ve had the edge. At this stage, with Diaz feeling reborn, he believes Schofield (19-0, 13 KOs) is in for a world of hurt.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” Diaz said. “I’m locked in and ready to go.”
