You’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone who loves the sport of boxing more than Jesse Hart. Even if he weren’t a highly ranked light heavyweight contender, chances are, he would be spending most of his evenings plopped right in front of the television watching two gloved-up strangers go at it.
This past Saturday night, Hart (31-3, 25 KOs) cleared his schedule, grabbed himself a few snacks, and spent his hard-earned money on a pay-per-view event. In the headliner, Hart watched as David Morrell and David Benavidez did an incredible amount of damage to one another.
Although he had moments, Morrell, The Ring’s No. 8 ranked light heavy, came up short. Now, it’s all about bouncing back. Morrell’s handlers aren’t focusing on his comeback fight just yet but when they do, Hart seemingly fits the bill. He has a notable name, durable, and dangerous - just the way Morrell likes them.
Hart isn’t the type to turn down a fight but a matchup against him, from his point of view, doesn't make sense for Morrell. After losing the first fight of his career, the slick Cuban should be looking for a much easier opponent. If Team Morrell believes that Hart is a stepping stone on their way to bigger and better things, the 35-year-old promises to dish out a career-altering beating.
“This Cuban kid, if he comes across my desk right now, gets ruined,” said Hart during an interview with The Ring. “He gets ruined mentally and physically. I’m not a confidence builder. He gets ruined bad. I would ruin this kid. I'll ruin David Morrell.”
It wasn’t that long ago that Hart was in a similar position as Morrell. His 2020 loss to Joe Smith Jr. left the Philly contender despondent. But, feeling sorry for himself wasn’t going to get Hart anywhere.
So, he picked himself up, went back to the gym, and came back as a new man. Now, with five straight wins, including four consecutive knockouts, he could use a big-time win.
Hart is a student of the game. He can also spot talent a mile away. Morrell is good. Damn good really. Hart, more than anything, would love to see how far Morrell can go in the sport. With that said, the Philly contender doesn't believe he’ll be going very far at all if he gets his hands on him.
“His thinking capacity isn’t there. I’m a volume puncher and I punch hard. This sh!t is gonna hurt. I wouldn’t throw him to the wolves because he can be good. Give the kid a chance, don’t throw him to the wolves. Y’all gonna throw him to the wolves early? Let’s make it happen then.”
