Jermall Charlo’s career cratered into the abyss, leaving many unsure if it could be revived.
Charlo’s time away from the game stemmed mainly from personal issues. Behind the scenes, things got messy and untenable.
When he was at his lowest, the former two-division champion felt alone. But while he sat with his head down in the dark, a familiar hand grabbed him to get his career and life back on track.
“My brother’s one of the main reasons that I’m back better now,” said Charlo to a group of reporters.
At one point, Jermall and Jermell Charlo were inseparable. Whenever you saw one, the other wasn’t far behind. Over time, however, things changed, but that hasn’t stopped them from getting back on the same page.
Now, Jermall will look to grab a world title in his third division as he makes his super middleweight debut
against Thomas LaManna on May 31.In a few short snippets, Jermell’s been spotted training right next to his twin brother and even shouting instructions to him. As for when he’ll return, that’s an open-ended question.
Ironically enough, he made a transient run to the super middleweight division in 2023, losing a wide decision to
Canelo Alvarez.During his brazen attempt to knock off the super middleweight king, Jermell was busy building up his body and putting on size and muscle. Jermall, admittedly, wishes he had his brother's help since then.
That’s water under the bridge now. With just two fights over a five-year span, Jermall is hoping to stay active. He’s also hoping to regain his championship status. With his brother standing by him, he believes all things are possible.
“I didn’t really have the help from him because he was getting ready for Canelo,” he said. “Now we locked in. My brother been there every step of the way. Anything I needed, he’s there for me.”
