Veteran gatekeeper
Jeremia Nakathila has shared a ring with the likes of Shakur Stevenson, Miguel Berchelt, Raymond Muratalla and Ernesto Mercado during a storied career.
On Saturday,
he will face uber prospect Abdullah Mason on the undercard of Keyshawn Davis WBO lightweight homecoming title defense against Edwin De Los Santos at Scope Arena, Norfolk, Virginia.
"The brighter they are the easier they fall and the bigger they come the harder they fall," Nakathila (26-4, 21 KOs) told
The Ring. "This is boxing and when I am at my best, I've got chance against anyone, I will be ready.
"I respect all my opponents and there is no difference when it comes to
Mason. I rate him very highly as a prospect and I will handle him as just another boxer in front of me."
The 35-year-old Namibian power-puncher will be fighting in America for the fifth time.
On his U.S. debut he was beaten by the precociously talented
Stevenson (UD 12) but showed enough to return and upset former WBC 130-pound titlist Berchelt (RTD 6).
However, in subsequent visits, he's been stopped by Muratalla (TKO 2) and Mercado (KO 2), in an ill-advised move up to junior welterweight.
"Boxing is very strange sport and it's very, very difficult to explain how I lost against this guy and how I lost against that guy," he said. "I prepared very well for all of fights, and I learned from all fights and come the June 7, I will be more experienced, since I learned a lot from all my fights."
Back in his homeland, Nakathila is a police officer and believes that helps him in boxing and also boxing helps him as an officer of the law.
"To be a police officer teaches you a lot, like discipline and how to protect others and how to be honest in life," he explained. "It's a very risky responsibility, as most of time, I have to risk my life to protect my fellow citizens and that makes me more tough, and I don’t fear anything in life."
Nakathila hopes to engage Mason in a firefight akin to Americans off the floor win over Yohan Vasquez at the same venue last November.
"Get ready for action and good luck," said Nakathila, who promises to take the youngster into deep water.
Nakathila's handler, Nestor Tobias, believes he can jockey his fighter to a famous win.
"This is a very tough fight but a great opportunity for Nakathila and the whole country of Namibia, as a win can put him back on top," said Tobias. "While the young man is very talented with good speed and good boxing ability, there is few things I will work on for Nakathila to expose."
Mason (18-0, 16 KOs) was a standout amateur before turning professional at 17 in 2021. Since then, the Ohio native has grown as a fighter and impressed with wins over Luis Lebron (TKO 3) and Mike Ohan Jr. (TKO 2).
The 21-year-old was surprisingly dropped twice by Vasquez before turning on the afterburners and scoring a second knockout. He has beaten Manuel Jaimes (KO 4) and Carlos Ornelas (RTD 6).
Keyshawn-De Los Santos, plus undercard bouts, will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. The undercard will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+.
