Getting back on track.
Former WBO bantamweight titleholder
Jason Moloney will look to snap a two-fight losing streak when facing
Herlan Gomez on Saturday's
Jai Opetaia-Huseyin Cinkara undercard at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia.
Moloney, The Ring's No. 9-rated bantamweight, knows how important this fight is if he's to continue boxing at the upper echelons of the 118-pound division.
"I'm really excited and truly grateful for this opportunity," Moloney (27-4, 19 KOs) told
The Ring. "It's been a long and frustrating time away from the ring since February, but I've been working really hard to make sure this next chapter of my career is a successful one.
"I feel like I've made some good improvements in the gym this year, excited to put on a great performance on Dec. 6 and what a card to be a part of."
After a four-fight stretch boxing in the US, Canada and Japan, the 34-year-old will make his first appearance on Australian shores in three years. It's a welcome change of pace for the affable Aussie, given most of his recent career has taken place overseas.
"It sure is," he concurred. "I'm really excited to be a part of the Tasman Fighters team and to have the chance to fight on home soil more often.
"Having the support of my country behind me is something that means a lot to me and although I enjoy flying our flag abroad, there's really nothing like fighting at home."
Moloney intends to roll back the years against Gomez and put the 118-pound division on notice.
"My goal right now is simple - become a two-time world champion and regain my spot as No. 1 in the division," he said.
His long-time manager Tony Tolj hopes this is the start of a successful union with a new promoter.
"We are looking to get Jason active again," Tolj said. "A big thanks to Mick [Francis] from Tasman Fighters for believing in us and getting Jason going again. It's refreshing to be fighting again on home soil. The goal is simple, become world champion again.
"Get on board now, December 6th is the first stop on the Mayhem Express with our destination being a two-time world champion."
Gomez (14-2, 10 KOs) has been a professional since 2019. The Filipino won his first five fights before suffering an eighth-round stoppage defeat in Thailand to future world title challenger Yuttapong Tondee.
The 26-year-old continued fighting in Thailand, scoring a first-round finish of faded former world title challenger Komgrich Nantapech in September 2023. He enters this after a defeat himself, having been outpointed over 10 rounds by Kalolo Amiri in Tanzania on May 24.
