Sultan Zaurbek def. Azinga Fuzile UD10
Sultan Zaurbek outboxed and outlasted Azinga Fuzile in a high-level and entertaining fight to score a unanimous decision win.
The 10-round junior lightweight matchup between 28-year-old southpaws served as the co-main event on Saturday at the Barys Arena in Astana, Kazakhstan.
After previously showing spurts of all-out aggression, Zaurbek (19-0, 13 KOs), ranked No. 2 by the WBA and No. 5 by the IBF, kicked the competitive clash into second gear and swept the final three rounds by overwhelming Fuzile (18-2, 12 KOs) with pace and power.
Judges awarded Zaurbek with scores of 98-92, 98-92, and 97-93.
Sporting blonde hair, the "Golden Boy" Fuzile showed a solid account of himself during the first half of the fight and rocked the Kazakh several times with sharply placed counter right hooks, but he didn't do nearly enough during the second half of the contest to get the win.
The South African Fuzile came into the clash having recently contemplating retirement but it was clear that he still had plenty of fight left to give. Fuzile formerly challenged for the IBF 130-pound crown in 2021 and came up short against Kenichi Ogawa, getting dropped twice in a tight fight. The only other loss of his career came against Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov in 2019.
Batyrzhan Jukembayev def. Kane Gardner UD10
Junior welterweight contender Batyrzhan Jukembayev marched forward with pressure and unleashed mostly one-way traffic against Kane Gardner to score a comfortable 10-round unanimous decision win.
The southpaw Jukembayev (24-1, 17 KOs) punished the crafty Gardner (17-5, 7 KOs) by punching through the high guard the entire fight, but he couldn't break down the Brit. Gardner, in defensive mode all night, peppered a jab off his back foot and marked up Jukembayev's face as the Kazakh looked for a KO to satisfy the hometown crowd that never came close to being there.
Jukembayev, ranked No. 14 by the WBA, is now on a six-fight winning streak since suffering the lone loss of his career to Subriel Matias in 2021 via eighth-round stoppage. In May, the 34-year-old stopped Ivan Redkach in five rounds.
Makhmud Sabyrkhan def. Nicolas Tordecilla TKO2
Makhmud Sabyrkhan, a 2024 Olympian from Kazakhstan, made his pro debut in fantastic fashion, scoring three knockdowns and a second-round stoppage win against Duc Dung Huynh (2-2, 2 KOs).
The 23-year-old southpaw super bantamweight Sabyrkhan dropped Huynh in the first round with a crushing left hook to the body. Huynh dropped to a knee with a delayed reaction and pounded his glove on the canvas in disgust but got up and finished the round.
With a busted nose, Huynh was dropped with another body shot in the second. Huynh's coach approached the ring apron to stop the fight, but Huynh refused to bow out. The referee allowed the action to continue, only for Huynh to eat another crushing body shot. A standing eight count ensued, but the fight was finally stopped right after.
Balaussa Muzdiman def. Maria Theresa Pinili UD8
Kicking off action on the ESPN+ portion of the Top Rank and Nomad Promotions co-promoted event was a bantamweight bout between Balaussa Muzdiman and Maria Theresa Pinili.
Although Muzdiman's three-fight, first-round knockout streak came to an end, the Kazakh still dominated the fight, as Muzdiman (7-0, 5 KOS) fought past the fourth round for the first time in her eight-year career to score a wide unanimous decision against the Filipina Pinili (7-2, 2 KOs).
