ORLANDO —
Jamaine Ortiz didn’t let a chaotic week-plus impact his performance in the ring Saturday night.
Ortiz handled business as expected, stopping late replacement
Ambiorix Bautista in the third round at Caribe Royale. Ortiz was originally scheduled to face
Steve Claggett (39-8-2, 27 KOs), but the Canadian contender withdrew due to an injury Aug. 13.
“I adapt and I adjust,” Ortiz told The Ring. “To me, it's not much. Having a long amateur career, you don't know who you’re fighting until the day of, so you just go in there and you figure it out. I spar all the time with people I've never seen fight before, and we get in there and we just do our thing.”
Ortiz (20-2-1, 10 KOs) asserted himself and seized control of the bout early against the overmatched Bautista. In the third round, Bautista (19-3, 11 KOs) was pinned against the ropes and went to throw a left hook, but appeared to hurt his left arm and dropped to the canvas. Shortly after he rose to his feet, Ortiz swarmed Bautista and dropped him as referee Alicia Collins stopped the fight.
The win was Ortiz’s third in a row since his controversial unanimous-decision defeat to Ring/WBO junior welterweight champion
Teofimo Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) in February 2024. The former title challenger hopes to return to the ring in November.
Ortiz is ranked No. 8 by the IBF, No. 10 by the WBA and WBO and No. 11 by the WBC at junior welterweight.
After the fight, he called for a fight against either WBA champion
Gary Antuanne Russell (18-1, 17 KOs) or WBC beltholder
Subriel Matias (23-2, 22 KOs).
He prefers those two names, given how they’re much more conducive to a fan-friendly fight. Ortiz added that he sees IBF junior welterweight champion
Richardson Hitchins (20-0, 8 KOs) as more of an option for a unification bout if he were to beat Russell or Matias.
“I want to give people action-packed fights,” Ortiz said. “I think those two fights would be the most entertaining fights."
