Jamaine "The Technician" Ortiz (19-2-1, 9 KOs) successfully defended his WBA Continental Americas Jr. Welterweight title on Saturday, winning a dominant decision over Yomar "The Magic" Alamo (22-4-1, 13 KOs) at the Caribe Royale in Orlando.
Alamo, a native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, started fast, landing cleanly on Ortiz in round one. The Worcester, MA native found success when he switched to a southpaw stance beginning in round two. The adjustment paid dividends throughout the rest of the contest, as Ortiz regularly bullied Alamo to the ropes to land heavy power shots.
"The first round was a rough round, but after that, I felt like I won every single round," admitted Ortiz, who out landed Alamo 163 to 88. "Everybody knows my whole career I was always ambidextrous. I just get in my rhythm, and I flow. I go through the fight, and I adapt as I go."
Despite a swelling right eye, Ortiz was able to dominate the rest of the bout behind a sharp right jab and well placed counter left hands. After 10 rounds, Ortiz was declared the winner by scores of 99-91 (2x) and 98-92.
"I’m looking for a world title," said the 28-year-old Technician to Chris Mannix moments after the fight. "I’ve been in there with the best before, and I feel like I deserve a world title shot. I’m ready for any of the 140 pound champions."
