If you thought losing would dent Jake Wyllie’s confidence, then you simply don’t know who he is.
This past weekend, the 24-year-old was given an opportunity of a lifetime when he took on George Kambosos. Although it wasn’t exactly ideal timing, Wyllie (16-2, 15 KOs) knew he couldn’t pass it up. So, despite having just a few days to prepare, he stood in the center of the ring and gave the former unified lightweight champion all he could handle.
Wyllie isn’t in the business of making excuses. He lost. He knows he did. But he’s attempting to look at the silver lining. There were plenty of moments where he had success and if he was given more time to get ready, he believes his performance would have been even better.
“I think with a full camp, I think we're up there,” said Wyllie to a group of reporters in Sydney Australia.
Now, it’s all about what Wyllie does next. Kambosos will use his win as a springboard into a showdown against current IBF belt holder, Richardson Hitchins. As for Wyllie, it’s too early to tell what his future plans will be.
But while he’ll go back to the drawing board, he’ll no longer walk those Australian streets without being asked to stop for pictures and autographs. And, according to promoter Eddie Hearn, the 24-year-old will be given a contract in the coming days.
So in terms of his supposed loss, Wyllie is enjoying it. Prior to jumping in there with Kambosos, he always exuded confidence but at the highest level, he still questioned himself. Now that he was given a glimpse of what it’s like up there, he feels comfortable and reassured that he won’t be in over his head against anyone, including the division’s champions.
“Yes he won the fight and yes some experience showed but I believe I’m at that level.”
