Jaime Munguia vs. Bruno Surace Rematch Planned For April 12 In Mexico
The biggest boxing upset of 2024 is set for a sequel.

Jaime Munguia isn’t looking to waste much time preparing for revenge after his shocking one-punch, sixth-round knockout loss against unknown French contender Bruno Surace during his Tijuana homecoming fight on December 14.

The super middleweight rematch is set to take place on April 12 in Mexico, Munguia’s promoter Fernando Beltran, the head of Zanfer Boxing, told The Ring.

Beltran couldn’t clarify if the bout would take place once again in Tijuana, or if it would be co-promoted with Top Rank and ESPN, handlers of Munguia’s last two fights after a lengthy run with Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN.

Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) and Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) met last month in what was supposed to be a victory lap of sorts for the Mexican following an active 2024 campaign that featured a dominant stoppage win against John Ryder in January, a competitive unanimous decision loss against Canelo Alvarez in May, and a comeback KO win against Erik Bazinyan in September.

The massive underdog Surace, a career-long middleweight with no proven pop, was considered on paper to be a winter whitewash for Munguia in front of a partisan crowd. The fight appeared to follow the script from the beginning, as Munguia floored the Frenchman with a crushing left hook in the second round.

Munguia was dominating the fight until he suddenly got caught with a devastating and detonating right hand from Surace in the sixth round of their scheduled 10-round clash. Munguia attempted to get up from the crushing shot that landed flush on his chin but did not beat the count by a hair.

Surace landed just 19 punches on Munguia, but the final one was one of the most significant shots heard around the boxing world in 2024.

The fight has been shortlisted as one of the six Upset candidates for the 2024 Ring Magazine Awards, which is set to take place on January 11 in London.
