As Jai Opetaia continues to win, the more his name gets mentioned next to Oleksandr Usyk.
Fighting The Ring, WBA, WBC, and WBO heavyweight champion isn’t something that causes sleepless nights especially as it's not a matchup appearing likely anytime soon. Opetaia, of course, has work to do atop the cruiserweight division.
After wiping out David Nyika to defend his Ring and IBF titles earlier this month, the 29-year-old is trying to figure out what’s next. Eddie Hearn, his current promoter, has frequently floated around the idea of Opetaia and Usyk squaring off in future. But while that showdown seems more feasible down the line, Opetaia (27-0, 21 KOs) has no problem facing Usyk as soon as possible.
“Whatever happens, happens,” said Opetaia during an interview with Seconds Out. “I'll wait for the phone call. If they wanna send me a contract, let’s do it. I don’t give a f---.”
Usyk, 37, is still on a victory tour. The unified champ knocked off Tyson Fury in back-to-back fights and is waiting on one of his fellow heavyweights to prove themselves worthy of a fight. As his search for an opponent continues, Opetaia is eyeing clashes against anyone holding a world title.
Once Nyika was out of the way, Opetaia brazenly called out Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez. It isn’t anything personal but the 33-year-old has something that he wants. Actually, two things.
Opetaia believes that Ramirez’s WBA and WBO titles would look lovely on his mantle. At this point in his career, fighting young hungry lions or mandatories doesn't interest him. In other words, if you don’t hold a cruiserweight title, don't even bother calling Opetaia.
“I’m chasing unification fights so I hope it happens. I hope we get to make these unification fights happen. I'm ready, let's make the fights happen. I'm chasing belts.”
