Jack Turner: The Key To My Power - I'm Born With It
A couple of weeks ago, the high quality fight between Olympic gold medalist, Galal Yafai, and former IBF champion, Sunny Edwards, shone some deserved light on the flyweight division in Britain.

From Damaen Kelly to Peter Culshaw and from Kevin Satchell to Lee Haskins, Britain has produced a long list of talented fighters who had the skill, fitness and toughness to compete with the best in the lower weight divisions but lacked the power and finishing ability required to break through into the mainstream.

Just ten fights into his career, Liverpool’s Jack Turner, 10-0 (9 KOs), has established himself as someone with the potential to become a real star.

Now campaigning down at super flyweight, the 22 year-old has proven himself to be a vicious puncher and has the cold, clinical mindset required to succeed at the highest level.

“What’s the key to power? I think I'm born with it to be honest,” Turner told The Ring. “I think I'm naturally gifted with it but it’s also hard work and training hard.

“I believe I'm blessed with the power I possess. You don't really see it at the light, lower weights.”

Turner is quickly developing into something of an attraction.

He has boxed seven times this year and accumulated the grand total of 14 rounds worth of action.

In October he was given a showcase on the undercard of Nick Ball’s maiden WBA featherweight tile defence against Ronny Rios and took out Argentina’s Gonzalo Corinaldesi inside a round in brutal fashion.

His next fight will take place on the undercard of Ball’s upcoming world title defence against TJ Doheny in March and he is slowly but steadily working his way up the running order.

Turner believes that his ability to finish a fight in instant, violent fashion gives him the chance to keep interest in the lower weight divisions at the same level Yafai and Edwards elevated it to.

“Yeah, 100%. I think everyone should be looking at me,” he said. “I've had 10 fights, 10 wins, nine knockouts and eight of them have come in the first round. I'm one of the boxers everyone should be looking at. I believe I'll be world champion by the end of next year, that's my goal.

“If I can get someone out of there, then I'm going to get them out of there but it's not my fault. If I can get them out of there, then I'm going to make it a nice early night.”

Turner fights out of Joe McNally’s busy Rotunda Gym in Liverpool. Rumours about his heavy hands began circulating well before the footage of him taking opponents out did and it has become nigh on impossible to find him quality sparring. The Rotunda is packed with quality fighters like Liam Smith, Josh Taylor, Pierce O’Leary and although they all operate in much higher weight divisions than Turner, they are the type of men he is having to hone his skills against.

“Well everyone's got their own style, he [McNally] doesn't really change their style. You just work on little things and making you overall a better boxer. There's loads of good lads in the gym who can wallop a bit,” Turner said.

“I can't get sparring, no one at all. I just have to spar the lads in the gym and they’re a lot heavier. We get good rounds in and play off each other but it's hard work getting me sparring. No one in the country wants to spar me. I had to fly a Mexican in for them to spar me not too long ago.

"It's a pain really because there's loads of good lads out here, but they're all avoiding me.”

After his recent single round demolition of Piero Aponte, McNally said that he is considering taking Turner on a sparring trip to Mexico and California to expose him to willing, world level fighters. McNally is steadfast in his belief that Turner is destined for that level himself and it is crucial that he is as well prepared as possible before he starts mixing with fighters who might be able to stand up to his power and answer back with some of their own.

It is an idea Turner is fully behind.

“Oh yeah, I would love that,” Turner said.

“I think it'll be a great experience. I think there'll be loads of great talent out there who I'll be able to mix in with and get some good quality rounds in. I think that's what I need right now because over here, at the moment, no one wants to spar me.

“It’d be a brilliant experience. Mixing it up with different styles and that, I think it'll be brilliant.”
