CO-OP LIVE ARENA, MANCHESTER -- In the night's second encounter between unbeaten junior-welterweights, Jack Rafferty looked to defend his Commonwealth title against Cory O'Regan. He didn't just do that, dismantling the 14-0 southpaw with an ease that has many salivating over him facing the rest of the 140lb pack.
This was the first of two title fights on the televised portion of Queensberry's DAZN streaming debut, headlined by a crossroads clash between Joe Joyce and Filip Hrgovic.
"You're making him look silly Cory," was the cry from the visitor's corner midway through the third, boxing well enough on the backfoot but getting caught upon occasion for his troubles against Rafferty, who refused to take a backward step.
That didn't age well.
As the crowd noise swelled, Rafferty landed a bruising body shot and appeared to hurt the challenger up in the corner. He could smell blood and caught him clean with a sweeping right, flooring the 29-year-old, saved by the bell after more of the same danger soon after.
It was unclear whether O'Regan had regained his balance to start the fourth, considering he'd been dropped heavy and only just beat the referee's assessment, but just as soon as he built up some momentum in an encouraging fourth, it disappeared.
Rafferty's right hand connected flush, his head snapped back again and while the referee incorrectly ruled it a slip, the looming danger was heightened as they somehow entered a fifth stanza.
Body shots were the champion's method of attack early in this round, cuffing shots to rattle the equilibrium too, while O'Regan gamely tried punching with him and embraced exchanging in the pocket.
It was futile, absorbing hellacious punishment and soon enough, Cory's corner had seen enough. Probably two rounds too late, but their fighter had come unstuck against a relentless machine, one energised by the chaos his punching had created.
