Some may not know it, but
Lamont Roach is one of the best trash-talkers around.
So, unsurprisingly, the WBA 130-pound titlist got right to it when he got face-to-face with
Isaac Cruz at Wednesday's press conference.
The two are officially
set to throw down on December 6 at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas. It'll be Roach's third consecutive contest competing at a different weight.
Still, despite fighting Cruz (28-3-1, 18 KOs) at 140 pounds, the 30-year-old is confident that he’ll become the first man to KO the WBC interim titlist.
Those threats, for the most part, sound familiar to Cruz. With yet another fighter promising to break him down, he can’t wait to remind the world of what he can do.
“I’m used to people talking their stuff before they step into the ring and then we see what happens,” Cruz said during their recent press conference. “All I can say is I’m gonna show him the same way I showed Rolly.”
Rolando Romero came out with much of the same rhetoric (25-1-2, 10 KOs) prior to their showdown which took place in March of last year. Cruz, though, remained calm and cool during the buildup and ultimately let his hands do the talking for him.
For eight rounds, Cruz pummeled his man until he was unable to continue. Roach, however, has proven that he can take a punch.
In his last appearance, he went toe-to-toe with one of the hardest pound-for-pound punchers in the sport,
Gervonta Davis. Although he also moved up in weight for their March 1 showdown in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Roach had little to no trouble dealing with his man.
By and large, Roach is still annoyed that their showdown ended in a
controversial majority draw, and hopes to one day run things back with Davis. That saga still remains unclear since Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) looked past the rematch
in favor of facing Jake Paul in an exhibition on November 14.
Considering the runaround given to him by Davis, Roach wants to take his frustrations out on his new opponent. To a certain extent, Cruz understands where Roach is coming from, but in terms of how their bout will play out, he simply won’t allow him to beat him, no matter how motivated he is.
“If you talk before the fight, then you’ll see inside the ring that trash talk goes by the wayside,” Cruz continued. “In the end, I’m gonna come out on top.”
