Lamont Roach has been hopping across divisions lately.
On Saturday, Roach will fight in his third division in as many fights when facing WBC interim 140-pound titleholder
Isaac Cruz (28-3-1, 18 KOs) at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Just don’t color Cruz as concerned heading into the clash, as he’s promising to give his rival a rude awakening in their
PBC on Prime Video PPV headlining fight.
“We know Roach is a great fighter who likes to take on challenges just like we do. He’s someone who can help me provide a great fight for the fans,” Cruz said during a press conference.
“We’re definitely gonna give him an unfriendly welcome to the 140-pound division. I’m experienced in this division, but I’m not overlooking him just because he’s moving up in weight. I’m not gonna underestimate what he can do at this weight class.
“I know I can knock him out. He’s human and the punches hurt him just like anyone else. We’re gonna make sure that we accomplish that objective when the time comes.”
Cruz and Roach are a common opponent of Davis, and they both currently stand as the two toughest opponents Davis has faced in his career.
Roach should have beaten Davis in March when Davis momentarily took a knee and halted the action; the sequence wasn’t ruled a knockdown. In 2021, Cruz gave Davis everything he could handle and the fight was scored close on the cards.
“Roach gave Gervonta Davis a good fight, but I’m just focused on my work. The only thing on my mind is what I can do in the ring against Lamont Roach,” said Cruz.
“Davis, Roach and I are three completely different fighters. I hope Roach comes ready to fight, because it will be very different from what he saw in March against Gervonta. Lamont says he’s gonna knock me out, so I’m gonna come after him with whatever it takes.
“We’ve had a tough training camp from the get-go because we know Roach is a great opponent. But we’ve stayed determined with victory as our only goal in mind. We’re coming to win, no matter what.”
Cruz is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision win in July against Omar Salcido Gamez, who served as a late replacement opponent for Angel Fierro.
Fierro and Cruz fought in a war and
fight of the year contender in February, but Fierro failed to make it to the weigh-in for his rematch.
Cruz is riding a two-fight winning streak since dropping a split decision and the WBA title he'd won from
Rolando Romero, losing to Jose Valenzuela in August 2024.
“My activity this year will be a big advantage. I’ve just had to make adjustments. I didn’t have to gear up for training camp. We’ve been able to prepare exactly how we wanted to,” said Cruz.
“I’ve gotten stronger in recent years and during that time, I’ve got more confident. Those are the biggest ways that I’ve improved.
“My power has always been there, and I’ve showcased it in every fight that I’ve had. Let’s see if Roach can go in there and withstand my power on December 6.”
