Inside camp at Big Bear: Saudi Fighters favor preparation over promotion
Appearing on every Netflix account worldwide, Canelo vs. Crawford has broken into the global mainstream. Riyadh Season branding stretches from the Las Vegas Strip to Allegiant Stadium. Even the most casual boxing fan is now aware of Saudi Arabia and Turki Alalshikh’s determination to stage a fight of unprecedented magnitude.

Far less publicized, however, are the Saudi fighters preparing in relative obscurity. Training in isolation at The Summit gym in the remote setting of Big Bear Lake, California, they are under the tutelage of the renowned trainer Abel Sanchez.

Mohammed Alakel, Sultan Al-Mohammed and Abdullah Darkazanly are favoring demonstration over conversation and will let their punches do the talking. Sultan Alsheikh, who runs the Mike Tyson Boxing Club in Riyadh, has been managing the training camp of the fighters and is keen to show another wrinkle to the business of Saudi boxing.

“It’s a massive platform and we’re honored to be part of it," he said. “Boxing is something that we have always enjoyed in our culture. Thanks to the vision and guidance of His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, we are pushing it further.

“All of the fighters and fans want to be a part of what we’ve put together in Riyadh, from the shows to the gyms — everyone is coming here. We’ve shown the world what Saudi Arabia is capable of.

“Now, we’re excited to come to America and show the world what we as Saudis can do.”

Fresh from a first-round KO in August, he’s aware of his potential but remains grounded on the pathway to getting there.

“Whatever happens, happens. The knockout in my last fight came naturally, I didn't force it," Alakel said. "We’ve been working on cutting the angles off and I feel like Abel is helping me punch with purpose.

“I feel like more aggressive but in a smart way — defensively. An when I punch, I can feel the impact.”

Alakel has noted the seclusion of Big Bear and the variety of sparring partners in California as the keys to progress for the Saudi team.

“It’s been going great. It’s very isolated," he said. "I’ve been going to the gym and home, the gym and home — on repeat.”

Yet, for all of the international media frenzy and investment from The Kingdom, the Saudis fighters have kept relatively quiet, aiming to let their performances speak for themselves.

“We need to work hard. We’re not letting the media get to our heads," Alakel said. "The most important thing is we put in the work and we trust in Allah and then the rest will unfold.

“We push each other.”

The sense of national spirit and raising standards has imbued itself into the training also.

“It’s good to have your people training with you. For example, in the sprints, there’s no cutting corners," he said. "Seeing one person going faster than the other pushes you. I’s very competitive, but in a good way.”

Alakel notes that sparring has been a much more international process.

“On every corner there’s a gym in California. So, you get a lot of different looks and a lot of variety of sparring," he said.

As for his own performance Saturday, Alakel remains in a flow state about the result.

“I’m going to box how I box, but I would love it to end in a stoppage, obviously," he said. "But I’m just going to do me. I’ll put on a great performance for you guys and you’ll see a star in the making."

Also included on the card is Sultan Al-Mohammed from Jeddah, a rising Saudi talent who is unfazed about making his professional debut on such a worldwide event.

“It’s no pressure," he said. "I’m excited to show my skills on such a big platform.”

Darkazanly (2-0-0), a Riyadh native and last seen under Usyk-Fury II, is keen to make a statement on his return to the ring.

“Since my last fight, I’ve used my time wisely," he said. "I’ve been working hard, learning new techniques and am ready to show people my next level.”

This weekend offers the Saudi fighters to step out of the shadows and into the spotlight. For all The Kingdom’s investment and spectacle surrounding this card, it will be the action in the ring that truly defines the night.

The Saudi fighters are ready to play their part and push the progress of Saudi boxing even further worldwide.
