How does Jack Catterall beat Ekow Essuman and what does it mean?
Jack Catterall will be looking to reintroduce himself to boxing fans when he fights Ekow Essuman on November 15.

The 12-round welterweight fight will provide the chief support to the middleweight rematch between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn which takes place at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Ring: Unfinished Business is available on DAZN pay-per-view.

So far, it's been a frustrating year for Catterall.

In February, he lost a split decision to Arnold Barboza Jr in a WBO interim title fight at junior welterweight. In July he had to settle for an unsatisfactory technical decision win over Harlem Eubank in his official 147 pound debut.

Following the fight with Eubank, the 32-year-old from Chorley, Lancashire made the difficult decision to leave his long time trainer, Jamie Moore, and young family and decamp to Philadelphia to train under ‘Bozy’ Ennis.

Although widely respected, Catterall (31-2, 13 KOs) has attracted criticism for adopting a safety first style of boxing and not pressing home his advantages at key moments. He believes the change of environment and hard sparring will give his career some added impetus as he regathers himself for what could well be a final assault on the world scene.

Essuman (22-1, 8 KOs) is a tough competitor who is ranked at No. 10 by The Ring.

The 36-year-old spent years waiting for a chance to prove himself beyond British level. Last May, he earned a unanimous decision victory over former undisputed junior welterweight champion, Josh Taylor, and now gets the chance to show what he can do a a massive stage.

Last fight: An accidental clash of heads brought an unscheduled end to Catterall’s fight with Harlem Eubank on July 5. Both fighters were cut but Catterall was in charge of a tense but turgid affair when the fight as stopped. He was awarded a unanimous technical decision after seven rounds.

Odds: Catterall is a firm 1/2 favourite with BET365 (-200).

How does Catterall win? Catterall is now training in Philadelphia but he is too smart and calculating to throw away a style he has spent years perfecting. He should, however, arrive in London with a sharper edge.

Although he now likes to be known as “The Spectre”, Essuman was once known as “The Engine”. He earned that nickname by setting a relentless pace and accelerating through the gears the longer the fight went.

Catterall likes to work at his own pace. Unless he has no other option, he isn’t going to get involved in a bell-to-bell war. Catterall will try to hold the centre of the ring, paw with his southpaw jab and use his world class timing to make Essuman pay a heavy price for attempting to close the distance.

Catterall is physically strong. He will be confident of negating Essuman inside and landing accurate, clean counter punches when there is distance between the two. Earlier in his career, Catterall was a ruthless finisher and he will be keen to make an immediate impression on his new training team and relaunch his career in dramatic style.

What does it mean if he wins? A win over the tough, fit Essuman would solidify Catterall as a contender at welterweight. In the past, he has always been far too good for his British rivals, only falling short in genuine world class.

Beating Essuman would prove that Catterall is still above domestic level and capable of launching another world title bid.

What they’re saying: "It was an opportunity I jumped at. A co-main event Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, 70 or 80,000 people, it's unbelievable. Stylistically it's a good fight for me. I think you look at the way Ekow fights and his last couple of performances, he's had a good run. I love domestic fights so it's a big opportunity and one that I'm I'm excited for.

“This fight puts me one step closer. I believe it's an eliminator for a world title. I know a good victory on November 15 pushes me one step closer and I believe 2026 I win my world title.” - Jack Catterall.

TV/Stream: DAZN Pay-Per-View; $59.99 in the U.S. (11.30 a.m. ET); £24.99 in the UK (4.30 p.m. GMT).
