How does Dillian Whyte beat Moses Itauma, and what would it mean?
When Dillian Whyte pulled out of his scheduled April fight with Joe Joyce after sustaining an injury during a freak gym accident, he promised his comeback would represent an even bigger opportunity.

On August 16, just over four months on from that cancelled date with Joyce, the man from Brixton will encounter a British heavyweight at the opposite end of the spectrum to The Juggernaut.

While 39-year-old Joyce is all size, durability and clubbing power, Moses Itauma is not only almost half his age but also agile, fast and full of the sort of youthful exuberance that comes from being perhaps the hottest prospect in all of world boxing.

But this sport is all about timing and on August 16 in Riyadh we will find out exactly who got who at the right time. Was this simply way too early for Itauma, against the big-punching, experienced world title challenger or perfect matchmaking against a faded big name?

Last fight: Defeated Ebenezer Tetteh via retirement after the Ghanian failed to emerge for the eighth round at the Europa Sports Complex, Gibraltar in December 2024. Whyte was leading 70-63 on all three cards at the time of the stoppage.

Odds: A very substantial underdog with most bookmakers in Britain pricing him from around 7/1 to as high as 9/1.

How does Whyte win: This one is very simple: Dillian Whyte has to land something hard on Itauma. Over the course of his 12 professional fights, we have still never seen the 20-year-old prodigy take a shot from anyone on the chin, much less find himself in any type of trouble. Does he have the whiskers to stand up from the sort of power Whyte packs, particularly in the left hook that has put paid to a number of heavyweight contenders over the years? Whyte must find a way to find a home for that shot and see exactly what Itauma is made of. Itauma has also ended his last eight fights in either the first or second round, Whyte must take Itauma out into the deeper waters of the fight and see if he can swim.

What it means if he wins: Despite the age and experience disparity, this would represent a huge win for Whyte, who many have written off as a top-level contender. Let’s not forget, Itauma has been hailed as the next genuine superstar of the division so if Whyte were to derail that with a victory it would catapult him back into the bustling chasing pack of heavyweight contenders. Rematches with Anthony Joshua and Dereck Chisora could follow.

What they’re saying: “Right now, Moses has got the bliss of ignorance, you know what I mean? He hasn't been tested, he hasn't been hurt. Right now, he's just got all emotions, he's all positive, he's knocking everyone out, everything's getting great in this career, we've all been there. So experience doesn't really matter so much, unless I make it matter.” - Dillian Whyte

TV/Stream: Moses Itauma versus Dillian Whyte and the whole Esports World Cup Fight Week fight card will be available to stream live on DAZN Pay Per-View. The event is priced at £19.99 in the United Kingdom, $19.99 in the United States, €19.99 in Europe and $39.99 in Australia.
