Can
Adam Azim take another step toward becoming a contender in a loaded 140-pound division?
He’ll have his chance on Saturday when he faces Kurt Scoby in a 10-round bout on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr. vs Conor Benn II at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
Azim (13-0, 10 KOs) is coming off the most significant win of his career, a ninth-round stoppage of former title challenger Sergey Lipinets on Feb. 1. Azim dropped Lipinets in the third round and battered him for the duration of the bout with brutal hooks and uppercuts. The Slough, Berkshire, native is ranked No. 9 by the WBC and No. 10 by the IBF.
Azim, 23, enters the bout vs Scoby (18-1, 16 KOs) having won four straight by knockout.
Last fight: Stopped Lipinets in the ninth round on Feb. 1 at Wembley Arena in London.
Odds: Azim is a huge favorite at -1100, according to FanDuel.
How does Azim win? Azim’s ability to land power shots will likely have to carry the day again against Scoby.
If Azim can work around Scoby’s jab, he can get into range and be in position to land the same blistering right uppercuts and left hooks with which he battered Lipiniets. Scoby’s jab is his best weapon, and finding a way to close the gap would likely go a long way toward limiting his offensive output. Azim’s right uppercut can be a particularly useful weapon on the inside.
Azim would also be wise to push the pace and keep Scoby on his back foot. In Scoby's lone loss, a sixth-round stoppage against Dakota Linger in April of 2024, he was constantly on the move and having to hold off Linger. The pressure caused Scoby to slow down before he got hurt with a right uppercut and was stopped by a barrage of punches.
What does it mean if he wins? A win may not do much for him in terms of moving him up the rankings. However, if he can deliver an impressive performance on a card of this magnitude, it could set the stage for him to earn a significant fight in 2026.
