When Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson via lopsided unanimous decision back in November, the gigantic age gap between them was criticized. It appears as though he heard his critics loud and clear and has decided to take on someone much closer to their prime.
“I want to fight Anthony Joshua,” said Paul on BS w/ Jake Paul.
Joshua, 35, is still recovering from the devastating knockout loss he suffered at the hands of Daniel Dubois. Although he strolled into their showdown as a heavy favorite, Dubois dominated him, resulting in a fifth-round stoppage defeat.
Since then, The Ring’s No. 5 ranked big man is attempting to pick up the pieces and continue with his career. Admittedly, Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) still loves the game. There’s nothing like those fireworks that explode from the bottom of the arena just before he makes his way to the ring.
Those moments might be fun and memorable but there won’t be many of them left. Well into his mid-30s and without a clear path back to a world title shot, Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s long time promoter, conceded that his man is on the back end.
Normally, fighters in Joshua’s position have to start from scratch, but this is Anthony Joshua we’re talking about here. He’s arguably the most popular heavyweight in the sport and recently went on a four-fight win streak prior to running into Dubois.
Dusting himself off and trying again, from Paul’s point of view, wouldn’t make much sense. The way he sees it, Joshua is damaged goods. So, instead of taking an arduous trip back up the ladder, Paul believes he might as well get in there with him instead. If he does, he promises that the pain he’ll endure will only be temporary.
“I know that I would f------ beat Anthony Joshua’s ass. He doesn’t have a chin and he has no skills and he’s stiff. I want to fight you.”
Eddie Hearn, promoter of Joshua, warned Paul that his boxer would gladly take the fight.
“To be honest, I look at it and I think Jake Paul against Anthony Joshua—for me, we’d do it for the banter,” Hearn said on Matchroom Boxing’s YouTube channel. “ ‘A.J.’ would fight Jake Paul. He’d fight anyone to be honest with you. If Jake Paul wants to step up and fight Anthony Joshua, he’ll need the relevant insurance.
“The only thing that was disappointing was he says 2026. That’s like me saying, ‘L.A. Olympics for the surfing in 2028, I’ll be there.’ Do it in 2025 if you really want to do it. You’re not going to get really much better at this stage. I don’t know. Those two have spoken, I spoke to A.J. this morning, he went, ‘Listen, of course I’d fight him.’
“[Joshua] said, ‘Why not?’” Hearn continued. “I said, ‘What do you want me to say when I’m asked about it?’ He said, ‘Tell everyone I’ll fight anyone, anytime, it’s not a problem for me.’”
