Caleb Plant is in the big fight business. Luckily for him, he may have another one coming his way soon.
This past weekend at the Caribe Royale, fans who crammed into the arena had their eyes on Edgar Berlanga. Although Plant wasn’t there in attendance, he was certainly glued to his television screen.
Thankfully, Plant didn’t bother getting up for a bathroom break. If he did, chances are, he would’ve missed the entirety of the fight. It took Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) less than three minutes to get rid of his man. Once he finished him off, he began naming names, one of which was Plant.
A smiling Eddie Hearn stood next to Berlanga as he continued to trash-talk all of his possible future opponents. From a monetary standpoint, you could make a case for all of them to get the Berlanga fight. However, there’s something about a Berlanga vs. Plant matchup that turns Hearn on. The storyline, the buildup, it all makes sense.
“I rate Caleb Plant, I like him,” said Hearn to FightHype.com. “I think he’s a great guy.”
He might be approachable and easygoing outside of the ring but when he’s in-between those ropes, Plant gives his opponents nightmares. Trevor McCumby, his most recent victim, was violently stopped in the latter rounds. But picking up KO wins isn’t exactly in his wheelhouse.
By and large, Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) loves to dance, move, and jab his opponents to death. He’s racked up countless lopsided decisions and believes a matchup with Berlanga wouldn’t be as tricky as some believe.
Hearn though, isn’t buying it. Sure Plant is light on his feet and a world-class boxer but he’s also sure that Berlanga has the sort of rough and tough style, along with a grimy attitude, that could negate everything Plant brings to the table.
“You’ve got to get a hold of him," continued Hearn. "You’ve got to try and beat him up. It’s easier said than done but it’s a great fight. It’s a great clash of styles. I believe Edgar can beat him. Let’s find out.”
