It would be irresponsible for
Devin Haney to look past WBO welterweight champion
Brian Norman Jr.
Haney (32-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) and Norman (28-0, 22 KOs) are set to square off November 22 as part of “The Ring IV: Night of the Champions” card at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Naturally, however, Haney is not only being asked how his fight against Norman will pan out, but what his future holds against peers and up-and-comers.
“I don’t see [the Gervonta Davis] fight ever happening,” Haney told reporters during a media workout recently. “You still have guys like
Shakur Stevenson,
Ryan Garcia. That’s a huge fight. A lot of guys are coming up. They make a new guy every day. You’ve got
Abdullah Mason. You’ve got
Curmel Moton,
Emiliano Vargas.
“It’s young guys coming up. I see them in the rearview. So, I don’t think that I’m too big, because I’ve been in their position before. So, I know they're on the rise. You never know. Maybe one day it will be a big fight when one of those guys comes up … We start with Brian Norman on November 22nd, and maybe I’ll go up to 154. You never know.”
Haney, 26, a former undisputed lightweight champion and junior welterweight titleholder, is used to taking on all comers. He has already scored wins against
Vasiliy Lomachenko,
Regis Prograis,
George Kambosos Jr. twice and, most recently in May,
Jose Ramirez.
Haney's performance against Ramirez was a forgettable fight that featured very little action.
It was also Haney's first fight since his controversial clash with Ryan Garcia in April 2024. Haney was dropped three times in that fight and originally suffered a majority decision defeat that was later overturned to a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug.
Oddsmakers are putting plenty of weight on Haney's last two outings. Haney is a slight betting underdog at plus-110, while Norman is listed at minus-135, according to DraftKings.
