Gennadiy Golovkin declares candidacy to become President of World Boxing
Gennadiy Golovkin is aiming for more big wins, only this time, outside of the ring.

While Triple G awaits voting to conclude in hopes of becoming a first-ballot International Boxing Hall of Famer for the Class of 2026, the former long-reigning middleweight champion announced Friday that he’ll be running as a presidential candidate for World Boxing.

“I am honored to announce my candidacy for President of World Boxing,” Golovkin said on social media. “If elected, I will work to ensure boxing’s Olympic future, restore global confidence, and guarantee that every federation, coach, and athlete has a fair chance to grow. Our mission is clear: to achieve full IOC recognition and to confirm boxing’s place at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028, Brisbane 2032 and beyond. On November 23, we will take an important step towards a brighter future. Let’s build boxing’s future – together.”

Golovkin will be running against Greece’s Mariolis Charilaos. Boris van der Vorst is the current President of World Boxing, but he announced last month that he is not standing for a second term. Elections will take place on November 23 in Rome, Italy. Other positions up for election include vice president, and several other slots across the World Boxing Executive Board.

World Boxing was launched in April 2023, "with a mission to ensure that boxing remains at the heart of the Olympic movement." Since their inception, 88 national federations have joined World Boxing.

In February of this year, the IOC granted World Boxing “provisional recognition as the International Federation within the Olympic Movement governing the sport of boxing at the world level." By March, boxing was officially back for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles after momentarily being on the ropes.

The knockout artist Golovkin retired in 2022 after completing a trilogy against Canelo Alvarez with a record of 42 wins (37 KOs), two losses, and a draw.

Golovkin currently serves as the President of Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee and has served as the Chair of World Boxing’s Olympic Commission since September of last year. He’s also a member of the IOC’s Olympism365 Commission.

Amateur boxing is near and dear to Golovkin, a 43-year-old from Karaganda, Kazakhstan. Golovkin was a silver medalist in the 2004 Athens Olympics and had a reported amateur record of 345-5 before turning pro in 2006.
