Undisputed flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora will get the star treatment Saturday when she headlines a Golden Boy Promotions card on DAZN against Marilyn Badillo at the Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California.
Having knocked out three out of her last four opponents during her title run, the 23-year-old Fundora (15-0, 7 KOs) has already positioned herself to be mentioned with the best women’s boxers in the world, a group that includes Claressa Shields, Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano, Alycia Baumgarner, Lauren Price, Mikaela Mayer, Caroline Dubois, and Yakasta Valle, among others.
Fundora co-promoter Oscar De La Hoya says “Sweet Poison” is the most satisfactory of the bunch.
“The youngest undisputed champion ever is a girl,” De La Hoya said on DAZN. “At Golden Boy, we love supporting women's fights. We are all about equality. We feel that we have the best women fighters on the planet. I love Amanda Serrano. I love Katie Taylor. They've put on amazing shows in front of millions of people. But Fundora, trust me, fundamentally, skill-wise, I have Fundora on top of the food chain.”
The rivalry between Taylor and Serrano is currently the most captivating one in women’s boxing. The pair is set to meet for a third time on July 11 at Madison Square Garden in New York after Taylor barely edged a pair of close decisions.
Fundora, meanwhile, is still searching for a known commodity as a dance partner.
The three-division champion Valle appears to be gearing up for a shot at Fundora’s crown. Valle moved up two weight classes to beat Marlen Esparza in a flyweight fight on a Golden Boy show last month.
In her most recent fight, Fundora, the younger sister of WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora, knocked out Gabriela Celeste Alaniz in seven rounds to become the undisputed 112-pound champion.
