Frank Warren Questions Steve Gray's 77-75 Scorecard Favouring Leigh Wood
NOTTINGHAM, England — Some 20 minutes had passed after the final bell and Frank Warren was still angry.

The Queensberry chief, Anthony Cacace's longtime promoter, just watched a high-tempo fight end conclusively with another Cacace stoppage victory against his third consecutive two-time world champion.

Yet one of the ringside judges, Steve Gray, had left him and many with a sour taste in their mouths. It emerged the 21-year pro referee, who doubles as a scoring official, had Wood up 77-75 at the time of the stoppage.

Having scored six Cacace fights stretching back to his last defeat for British honours against Martin J Ward in July 2017, many were left perplexed and understandably disappointed by the scorecard.

Benoit Russell (79-73) and Olena Pobyvailo (77-75) were the other two judges scoring in Cacace's favour, though the breakdown of Gray's rounds makes for even more questions to be asked and accountability needed.

Gray gave Wood Rounds 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8 — two of which only he scored for the home fighter. Upon hearing this, Cacace expressed his disappointment for someone he'd previously held in high regard, while members of the IBO champion's team told The Ring that Warren intended to flag the scorecard to the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) for an investigation.

Warren told The Ring's Louis Hart: "He was in-front. I don't understand Steve Gray's scoring. He had him way behind. Only scored three rounds for him, it's [expletive] scoring, don't know how he's come to that but you've got to say it how it is. This can't keep happening.

"We're being honest about it. I'm very much against this [Artificial Intelligence] stuff, but all they're doing is knocking themselves out of a job. Some people do it [judge, officiate poorly] consistently and I don't know."

Cacace felt comfortable from the off but accepted that he'd lost two rounds, the third and "probably" the seventh during an in-ring interview with BoxNation. Round 4 was a clear round for Wood, while two of the three judges scored 5 and 7 for the Nottingham favourite.

In his dressing room afterwards, the winner doubled down during another interview with The Stomping Ground.

"I really like Steve Gray, until I heard that there, I don't know how you can do or score it like that. Is he [expletive] nuts?" he said. "It was obvious, I was jabbing the head off Leigh, six rounds to two. I knew what rounds I'd lost, could read the vibe from the boys in the corner, have a look at yourself. There are people who give their lives to boxing, trying to put food on their table for their kids and you do that? Disgrace."

For the second time in little over a month on a Queensberry show, controversy surrounding officials has lingered post-fight. Ron Kearney has been called before the BBBofC to explain his actions, having officiated David Adeleye's contentious stoppage win over Jeamie Tshikeva. Now Gray potentially finds himself under review.
