Floyd Schofield Sick, Shakur Stevenson To Face Josh Padley Or Moussa Gholam On Beterbiev-Bivol Undercard In Riyadh
One of the marquee matchups on the stacked pay-per-view card Saturday night Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is off.

The Ring has learned that undefeated lightweight contender Floyd Schofield was deemed too ill Tuesday night to be cleared by the British Boxing Board of Control for his scheduled shot at Shakur Stevenson’s WBC 135-pound championship on the Artur Beterbiev-Dmitriy Bivol undercard at ANB Arena. England’s Josh Padley and Spain’s Moussa Gholam were the two potential replacements under consideration to replace Schofield on short notice as Stevenson’s opponent at the time this story was posted.

The BBBofC is regulating this Riyadh Season card on behalf of the General Entertainment Authority. The seriousness of Scholfield’s illness was not known Tuesday night.

Regardless, Padley or Gholam would be a bigger underdog versus Stevenson than Schofield.

The 29-year-old Padley (15-0, 4 KOs), of Armthorpe, England, is the WBC’s 12th-ranked contender for Stevenson’s 135-pound title and thus qualifies for a title shot. He defeated previously unbeaten countryman Mark Chamberlain (16-1, 12 KOs) by unanimous decision in Padley’s last fight, a 10-rounder September 21 on the Anthony Joshua-Daniel Dubois undercard at Wembley Stadium in London.

The 29-year-old Gholam (22-1, 13 KOs), a native Moroccan who resides in Spain, has won three straight bouts since his 10-round, split-decision defeat to Azerbaijan’s Elnur Samedov (19-1, 8 KOs) in December 2022 in Ekaterinburg, Russia. Gholam is not ranked in the top 15 by the WBC and therefore would not be eligible to fight for Stevenson’s title.

Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs), of Austin, Texas, is ranked 13th by the WBC. While talented, Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs), a three-weight world champion from Newark, New Jersey, would’ve represented a significant step up in competition for Schofield, one of Golden Boy Promotions’ prized prospects/contenders.

DraftKings listed Stevenson as a 14-1 favorite to defeat Schofield, whose fight with Stevenson could be rescheduled for later this year.

Stevenson was supposed to fight former IBF junior lightweight champ Joe Cordina in his debut under the promotional umbrella of Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing on the Beterbiev-Bivol undercard October 12 at Kingdom Arena.

A lingering injury to the 27-year-old southpaw’s right hand required surgery early in September, however, and caused Stevenson to withdraw from that optional title defense versus Wales’ Cordina (17-1, 9 KOs). The 2016 Olympic silver medalist agreed to fight Schofield once his hand healed rather than having his bout with Cordina rescheduled.

Assuming Stevenson’s fight with Padley or Gholam is solidified, it will be part of a seven-bout pay-per-view show sponsored by Riyadh Season. It is set to start Saturday at 10 a.m. ET in the United States ($25.99) and 4 p.m. GMT in the United Kingdom (£19.99).
