The warnings from his peers and even his promoter fell on deaf ears.
Floyd Schofield is only 22 years old and has his entire boxing life ahead of him. With only a handful of fights under his belt, experience just isn’t something he has. Wisdom, however, is a bit overrated, he believes. Although he could’ve opted to take the slow and monotonous route, he’s decided to shoot straight to the top.
On February 22nd, Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) will stand across from The Ring’s No. 3 ranked lightweight and current WBC champion, Shakur Stevenson.
Oddsmakers and practically everyone outside of Schofield’s camp, isn’t expecting him to get it done. Jamaine Ortiz considers himself a neutral observer. Simply put, he doesn’t have a dog in the race. According to Schofield’s doubters, he’s far too young to be in this position. Ortiz though, is paying no mind to his age. After analyzing both fighters, he’s giving Schofield more than just a puncher's chance.
“I don't think so,” said Ortiz to FightHype.com when asked if he believes Schofield is too young. “To be honest, I think Floyd can take Shakur.”
Stevenson, 27, is fresh off an inactive 2024 and more recently, a lengthy recovery process following hand surgery. Rust though, isn't the reason why Ortiz likes Schofield’s chances.
All in all, Schofield is a talented fighter, one who goes all out. Stevenson is known for his defensive acumen. Ortiz though, has never been impressed with what the former Olympic silver medalist brings to the table. So, as long as Schofield doesn’t get swallowed by the spotlight and lets his hands go, Ortiz is convinced that their fight has upset written all over it.
“I’ve seen Floyd fight a little bit and he’s a little bit of that aggressive fighter. If he fights strong and puts on the pressure against Shakur, I think he can do very good and win the fight.”
