Filip Hrgovic had no idea that the bottom of the heavyweight mountain could get so dark and cold.
For years, he was accustomed to the good life. Car doors were held open for him, fresh food was prepared for him daily, and gigantic paychecks were deposited into his bank account whenever he had a fight lined up. But, after getting pummeled by Daniel Dubois, things are different.
For the first time in a long time, Hrgovic (17-1, 14 KOs) has to start from scratch. This Saturday night, his rebuild will begin when he takes on Joe Joyce.
Considering that things didn’t go according to plan against Dubois, Hrgovic isn’t underestimating anyone, especially someone with Joyce's credentials. Nevertheless, Hrgovic’s confidence hasn’t been stripped away. He still walks, talks, and acts like a man who will not only win but also dominate.
“I’m looking forward to the win,” said Hrgovic during the final presser. “I want to knock him out. That’s the plan.”
Joyce, a former Olympic silver medalist, might be the most desperate man in the sport. At one point, he seemed like the heir apparent to the heavyweight throne. At the age of 39 and losses in three of his last four fights, he can’t afford another L. Hrgovic though, doesn't feel bad for him. He has no intention of taking it easy.
By and large, there’s a lot on the line. A loss for Hrgovic could leave him on the outside looking in forever. On the other side of that coin, however, a win, even one over a fighter who appears to be as diminished as Joyce, could put him back where he once was.
“I think it’s a good opportunity for me,” continued Hrgovic while smiling. “This win, hopefully, will bring me back to the top.”
