Andre Ward is incredibly happy with the decision he made to walk away from boxing in 2017. But we now know the Hall of Famer wouldn’t mind jumping back into the ring for a massive fight.
“Me and Anthony Joshua,” Ward said on a self-recorded video earlier this month. “That’s a fight I would take at Wembley Stadium.”
Ward is typically your favorite fighter's favorite fighter.
Jaron Ennis is among that group. The Philly star grew up watching Ward dominate in the ring. He also watched in awe as Ward grabbed back-to-back wins over Sergey Kovalev in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
At the time, Ward (32-0, 16 KOs) was the consensus number one pound-for-pound fighter in the sport and a unified 175-pound champion. Those days, however, were nearly a decade ago. With the now 41-year-old opting to retire immediately after, Ennis doesn’t like the thought of him returning. He certainly doesn’t like the possibility of him ending his near 10-year retirement to fight a gigantic, hard-hitting heavyweight star like
Joshua.
“I don’t like it,” Ennis told YSM Sports Media. “I think he should stay retired. Anthony Joshua, that’s a big dude.”
Joshua has been on Ward’s mind for years now. Following his win over Kovalev, Ward and his team admitted that a showdown against Joshua, with a preparatory fight against Tony Bellew first, was the plan.
Life, nevertheless, got in the way, as Ward chose to retire instead, citing knee issues.
During Ward's time away from the game, Joshua’s career has ebbed and flowed. A two-time unified champion, e’s been at the top of the heavyweight mountain with wins over Wladimir Klitschko, Joseph Parker. and Andy Ruiz Jr. He's also hit rock bottom, most recently thanks to his crushing fifth-round knockout defeat to
Daniel Dubois.
Now, the 35-year-old is sitting back and weighing his options. Though it's unlikely, Ward could get the call. If he does, however, Ennis doesn’t believe he should answer.
“Andre Ward has the skills to pull it off, but that’s a big guy,” Ennis said. “We don’t know if we can take Joshua’s punch. I think he should stay retired and enjoy the fruits of his labor.”
