Fight Picks: Jaime Munguia vs. Bruno Surace 2

In their first meeting Munguia seemed to be having his way with the smaller man until he was caught out of the blue and stopped in the sixth round in startling fashion.

Was it a one off or does Surace simply have his number? We will find out on Saturday on the undercard of Canelo-William Scull at The Venue Riyadh Season, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves on DAZN at 6 p.m. ET and midnight in the UK.

Surace, rated No. 7 by The Ring at super middleweight, turned professional in his native France and was held to a draw in his first and fifth fights as a junior middleweight.

He reeled off 22 consecutive wins at home and settled in at middleweight but didn't face anyone of note. Which was why he was selected to travel to Mexico and jump up to super middleweight and iced Munguia.

Munguia, rated at No. 8 by The Ring at super middleweight, seemingly came from nowhere to bludgeon Sadam Ali (TKO 4) and lift the WBO junior middleweight title. He made five defenses, most notably defeating Liam Smith (UD 12). Munguia then stepped up to middleweight and established himself further by beating the experienced trio of Gary O’Sullivan (TKO 11), Kamil Szeremeta (RTD 6) and Gabriel Rosado (UD 12).

The 28-year-old had conversations to face WBC titlist Jermall Charlo that ended in a frustrating stalemate. Weight issues saw him move up and edge Sergiy Derevyanchenko (UD 12) in a classic. He stopped John Ryder (TKO 9), lost his unbeaten record to Ring/undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez (UD 12) but bounced back by taking the scalp of Erik Bazinyan (KO 10) before the shocking loss to Surace (KO 6).

Surace (26-0-2, 5 knockouts) is no longer the unknown commodity. Without the element of surprise can he pull the upset again? Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) had always shown a good chin prior to the Surace loss. He has only been down against Alvarez in his previous fight and he got up and fought on. However, the smaller, supposedly light-punching Surace was able to knock him out. Was that a sign that he no longer has the same punch resistance? How much will that first win have improved Surace? Conversely, how will the first fight affect Munguia?

Online gambling group William Hill lists Munguia as an 1/8 (-800) favorite, while Surace is priced at 9/2 (+450); the draw is 16/1 (+1600).

Here's how the experts see it:

TOM GRAY: MUNGUIA TKO 9

"I'm ready to be proven wrong, but I think Surace KO 6 Munguia was a Cinderella moment for the French fighter back in December. Munguia's shots were effective that night, but he was very careless defensively and got caught. With his tail up for revenge and a more cautious approach, Munguia can even the score by stoppage late in the fight."

ANSON WAINWRIGHT: MUNGUIA UD

"Boxing is the theatre of the unexpected. And that is never more the case than when Bruno Surace was selected to jump up a weight class, as someone whose record indicated wasn't a puncher. Boxing has a way of surprising you and that was very much that case last year when Surace landed the perfect punch that led to The Ring Upset of The Year. Can he repeat it or will Munguia gain revenge? It's evenly poised, Munguia was winning the first time before he got caught. Was that an aberration or is his punch resistance not what it was? I think the fight will be more competitive than the first fight but will go with Munguia to win a hard fought 12-round unanimous decision."

CHRISTIAN MBILLI (SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT CONTENDER): MUNGUIA PTS

"I hope the French guy can do it again. But I don't think Munguia will underestimate him this time, so he'll probably get his revenge via decision."

DUKE MCKENZIE (FORMER THREE-DIVISION TITLEHOLDER/TV ANALYST): MUNGUIA SD
"it wasn’t that long ago that Munguia was being talked about as the next best thing in world Boxing the new superstar but like all superstars a lapse of concentration can cost them dearly as was the case when these two first met Surace caused a huge upset with a KO victory repeat or revenge, I’m going for revenge Munguia must surely know a boxing master class is the answer to victory he mustn't be drawn into a dog-fight and can win this in his favour on points split decision."

JOLENE MIZZONE (MANAGER): SURACE TKO 8

"I am going with Surace to pull out the win again. I don’t think it was lucky the first time he won. I think 168 lbs is too big for Munguia and it shows. I have said it before and will say it again, Surace went into Munguia’s backyard and pulled off the upset. Many boxers will not do that, so I give him the edge."

ROBERT DIAZ (MATCHMAKER): MUNGUIA KO 5

"Expect a much different fight this time around. Munguia will be so much sharper, faster and better then ever before. Surace will try but Munguia will make it look so easy. In the end, the revenge will be a success and Munguia by KO 5!"

ALEX STEEDMAN (COMMENTATOR): MUNGUIA PTS

"How fighters react and respond to being knocked out is generally difficult to interpret and so it is with Munguia. He might skip over it in his mind, putting it down to a miracle punch from an opponent he was well on the way to beating. But Surace knows and that can be a dangerous thing. And there was something impressive about the composure under fire from Surace who produced absolute technique when it was most needed. But Munguia looked well on his way in that fight and you’d think just a little more attention to detail as well as obvious diligence in defence can see him finish what he started previously. I wouldn’t be shocked if Surace did it again or if he is worn down and stopped himself. But I’m thinking a slightly cagier Munguia wins on points."

MARK RAMSAY (TRAINER): MUNGUIA TKO 4

"Was the first fight just a mistake? Surely, But I hope this defeat will be a positive turning point for him. Normally this is a fight that should not last more than six rounds. Munguia is superior to his opponent in all departments. Munguia TKO 4."

WAYNE MCCULLOUGH (FORMER WORLD CHAMPION/ TRAINER): MUNGUIA TKO

"Jaime Munguia and Bruno Surace gave us fireworks in their first fight last December, with both men hitting the deck in a wild back-and-forth. Bruno came out on top that night after Munguia looked shaky getting back to his feet — but don’t expect Munguia to forget that. Bruno’s got real knockout power, and you can bet he’ll be hunting for another stoppage here. He’s got a tight guard and a dangerous right hand that can end the night in a flash if he lands it clean again. But Munguia showed last time he’s got the tools too, dropping Bruno with a vicious left hook. The difference this time? Munguia has to stay relentless once he’s got Bruno hurt. If he does, I see him getting the stoppage inside five rounds — and setting up an explosive trilogy fight that fans will be dying to see."

RICH MAROTTA (COMMENTATOR): MUNGUIA PTS

"Can Surace repeat his incredible KO victory? I think it is possible because he carries all the mental and psychological advantages going into this rematch. He has not tasted defeat, he has KO'd his adversary and he has got to be in Munguia's head. That said, I am still going with Munguia to turn it around, use his body-punching to slow Bruno down just enough to score an uncomfortable decision win."

BOB SANTOS (MANAGER/ TRAINER): MUNGUIA

"I've got Munguia in the rematch. I think that was a one off. I think he's gonna be mentally focused and I don’t think Surace catches lightning in a bottle twice."

JOHN BENINATI (MATCHMAKER): SURACE KO

"Munguia is very strong but we all saw what happened last time. Surace very skilled and great ring IQ. It will be like Calzaghe vs. Lacy. Surace KO."

CAMILLE ESTEPHAN (PROMOTER/ EYE OF THE TIGER): MUNGUIA KO

"Munguia I believe will be much better in the second fight. The first fight, without taking anything away from Surace’s win, was clearly not taken seriously enough by Munguia's camp. I think Munguia should come out the winner by KO in 8 or 9."

ERIK BAZINYAN (SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT CONTENDER): MUNGUIA KO

"I think Munguia will be better with Eddy Reynosa in his corner, and will knock Surace out somewhere between 7 and 10 rounds."

STEVE KIM (THE 3 KNOCKDOWN RULE): MUNGUIA KO

"I don't want to insult Sarace by saying he landed a "lucky punch." The bottom line is that he executed it. But I still get the sense that Munguia -- who was in control of that first encounter -- is the far superior fighter and this time around wont let his guard down. I like him by mid-round KO."

RAUL MARQUEZ (FORMER WORLD CHAMPION/ COMMENTATOR): MUNGUIA KO 4

"How many times have we seen champions get upset in their hometown? It happens a lot. Only Munguia knows what went wrong in his first encounter with Surace. Munguia will come well prepared make the right adjustments and KO Surace in 4 rounds."

OSWALDO KULCHE (PROMOTER/ LATIN KO): MUNGUIA KO

"I think Munguia is a great fighter and he definitely can't lose or his career will be mostly done. I think he needed to focus on training, not partying. And also stick with a trainer, he changes every fight. I believe he'll win. I believe Munguia wins by KO."

RUDY HERNANDEZ (TRAINER): MUNGUIA KO

"Normally I believe the one that wins first, wins again. But this time, I'm going against that mentality. Munguia was doing good until he got caught. I like Munguia in the rematch and we'll watch fight No. 3 in the future. Munguia pays Surace back with a KO in his favor. It wont be easy but he'll catch him and get the win by knockout."

JOE ROTONDA (MATCHMAKER/ MAIN EVENTS): MUNGUIA PTS

"This rematch should be fun. Although Munguia was controlling the fight up until he got stopped, Bruno proved he belonged in there and also showed incredible toughness the way he recovered from being knocked down early. This fight should answer a lot of questions regarding both fighters. Is Bruno Surace the real deal? Or is Munguia on the back 9 after being stopped by a puncher who is not known for his power? I believe Bruno makes this competitive once again, but I think Munguia will do enough to earn a decision win here."

Final Tally: Munguia 16-2
