Felix Trinidad Brings Orlando Community, Top Names Together For His Invitational
ORLANDO — Wherever Felix 'Tito' Trinidad goes, chants of 'Tito, Tito, Tito' typically aren't far behind.

It was no different on Saturday, as chants of "Tito" echoed throughout the Roberto Clemente Middle School gym ahead of, and during the Felix Trinidad Invitational, an amateur boxing event organized by the Orlando and the Trinidad Boxing Clubs.

The impact of Trinidad’s appearance was cemented for good in the Orlando community, as October 25 was declared Felix Trinidad Day in a written proclamation from Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings before the event began.

Trinidad received a plaque in the ring and was joined by members of his family, super middleweight contender Edgar Berlanga and organizers of the event.

"When I hear the fans screaming Tito, there are times I’m like 'Man, I would love to come back to boxing,'" Trinidad told The Ring.

"But then I'm like, no, I'm good. Everything is good."

Puerto Rico's Trinidad (42-3, 35 KOs) was a three-division champion and 2014 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee. His reign during the 1990s cemented him as one of the sport's top pound-for-pound fighters, beginning his career with 40 straight wins - 33 coming by knockout.

Berlanga, WBA bantamweight champion Antonio Vargas and 2024 Olympic bronze medallist Omari Jones were also in attendance. Trinidad's importance was especially felt by the aforementioned trio.

"It was a legendary moment for me," Berlanga said of being in the ring with Trinidad. "I get sentimental when it comes to him because he's the reason why I started boxing. He's the first fighter I watched on TV when I was two or three years old. I used to sit down and watch all his big fights with my family. My grandmother, grandfather, they used to have their friends over and we would just throw house parties and watch him fight. To build myself up, get to this level and be in front of him, it’s a dream come true."

"He was one of my favorite fighters growing up, and it's my first time meeting him," Vargas said. I was so excited to meet him in person. He was an inspiration for me as a fighter growing up. I believe my father put me in boxing because of him."

"I watch and study him," Jones said of Trinidad. "He's a legend."

Orlando Boxing Club founder and co-owner Anthony Blanco had spent two years trying to get Trinidad to attend an event, though, their schedules didn't align at the time. Then, when Blanco was alone in one of his gyms during the first week of September, he got the news of a lifetime, a phone call confirming Trinidad would be able to attend an event.

"I just started crying," Blanco said.

"I was just emotional and was like, 'I will cherish this for the rest of my life.' I'm so grateful for him, Edgar coming out and all the athletes here," Blanco added. "This is really what it is about. The young fighters coming up, they will carry the sport through the next generation, [and] for them to show up and show support means the world to me."

The Felix Trinidad Invitational also represented something of a family gathering, as Trinidad's sister Irma serves as the boxing club's coach and had multiple fighters participating in the event.

"I'm so proud," Tito said. "She's a warrior. As a woman, she's training these boxers and I'm so proud seeing her do all of that."

Tito often couldn't go anywhere without being swarmed by fans. Some fights earlier in the day were delayed as people stood around Tito trying to meet him. Wherever Tito was, people would line up where he was headed hoping to either get their boxing gloves or shirt signed, or get a photo with him.

Even as team members wanted him to just sit down, Trinidad went against their wishes as he sought to ensure every fan got what they wanted. While that would be overwhelming for many, Trinidad wouldn't have had it any other way.

"I'm just grateful for everybody that gathers together and comes here," Trinidad said. "I'm thankful to God, to Puerto Ricans and those who aren't Puerto Rican."
