The boxing world has been waiting for Chris Eubank Snr to voice his opinion on the upcoming fight between his son, Chris Jnr, and Conor Benn.
On Friday night, the former two-weight world champion finally decided to enter the fray and declared that he doesn’t think the fight will take place.
Eubank Snr was at ringside as his nephew, Harlem, calmly dissected Tyrone McKenna over ten one-sided rounds in Brighton.
Eubank, 21-0 (9 KOs), produced a calm, clever performance to take apart the game but outmatched Irishman, dropping him three times before the fight was stopped.
The win earned Eubank an IBF welterweight ranking belt but although the 31 year-old spoke about wanting to work his way towards a world title opportunity, he spent a good portion of his post fight interview calling for a fight with Benn.
There is a major obstacle preventing that from happening.
Benn is preparing to leap up to the middleweight division to fight Harlem’s cousin, Chris, in a delayed grudge match at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 26th.
Harlem’s uncle,Chris Snr, has been one of the fight’s biggest detractors since it was first mooted all the way back in the summer of 2022.
The Eubank - Benn feud has been rumbling on for more than 30 years. Back in 1990, Eubank beat Benn’s father, Nigel, and the two battled to a controversial draw three years later.
Whilst former two-weight world champion, Nigel, was a constant presence during an explosive press tour which saw Eubank crack an egg onto Benn’s head, Eubank Snr was notable by his absence.
Eubank Snr joined his nephew during his post-fight interview to state his belief that whilst the Eubank and Benn families will renew hostilities at some point this year, it will in fact be Harlem and Conor who end up fighting.
“What I should tell you is that the weight he is right now, [Harlem] he’s like 70 kilos. So that's the weight of Conor Benn. You know, they're walking around in the same weight,” Eubank Str said on Channel 5.
“He's a 147lb fighter. Conor used to be a 147lb fighter. He's been spoiled. He's been misled. This is the fight for him. When the fight falls through, which it will - and I'm talking about the Junior against Conor - when that falls through, he's going to be ready.
“It may not be on the same date, but that's going to be the next fight for them, I believe.”
Through the build-up to the proposed first meeting between Eubank and Benn, which was scheduled for October 2022, Snr maintained a strong belief that the fight wouldn’t take place. He was proven right when news broke that Benn had returned a positive pre-fight VADA test for the banned substance clomifene, cancelling the fight just days before it was scheduled to take place.
News of a second failed test quickly followed and Benn has since been embroiled in a lengthy, complicated legal battle. Late last year he was cleared to resume his career in the UK. Negotiations for a fight between Eubank and Benn never really died out but they were quickly and fully rekindled and a deal agreed.
Without giving an exact reason, Eubank Snr believes that history will repeat itself and that, once again, the fight will fall through. If he is proven to be correct, he insists that Harlem will be ready to step into the breach and face Benn.
“If you check back, when the fight was made the first time I said it's not going to happen. The day before the fight, it was pulled,” he said.
“I'm saying to you that Harlem ‘The Gold’ Eubank, he's the fight for Conor Benn and that's a fight that he deserves because he's been put on the back burner for years.
"They've destroyed the career of Conor Benn, in my view. They’ve destroyed it and the only way he's going to actually get any dividend to get back is to beat an undefeated Eubank. And that's Junior's cousin, Harlem ‘The Gold’ Eubank.”
