Erickson Lubin is one of the few fighters who hates looking ahead. He has a dinner date lined up with Ardreal Holmes Jr. on May 10th, at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida, and knows that a loss would put him at the bottom of the junior middleweight barrel.
With just a few days remaining, Lubin (26-2, 18 KOs) spends most of his time making sweat puddles at his nearby gym. In no way, shape or form is he taking Holmes lightly but a win, at least in his mind, is essentially guaranteed.
Once his amateur rival is out of the way, Lubin will look to get one of the division’s champions in the ring. But matchups against Sebastian Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev, while important, aren't what he would categorize as gigantic bouts. He does, however, view a certain welterweight champion as exactly that, a big-time fight.
“I think Boots (Jaron Ennis) is a great fighter,” said Lubin on MillCity Boxing. “I think he’s one of the best fighters in boxing today. I think one day, me and Boots is gonna have a big showdown.”
Although he recently became a unified champion thanks to his stoppage win over Eimantas Stanionis, Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs) may not stick around the welterweight division for long.
The Philly star desires more titles, not arbitrary defenses against nondescript opponents. The way he sees it, if he isn’t able to become an undisputed champion relatively quickly, he’ll head on over to the junior middleweight division and attempt to make his mark there.
Once he does, Lubin will be waiting at the door for him. The 29-year-old doesn't have a bad word to say about the smooth switch-hitter. He knows a great fighter when he sees one and simply wants to get it on with him.
“He’s a great fighter,” admitted Lubin. “I’m a great fighter, I think it’s gonna happen.”
