Erick Rosa Hoping For Spot On The Ring's July 12 Card vs. Rene Santiago In 108-Pound Unification
Talented Dominican Republic fighter Erick Rosa holds the WBA junior flyweight title and is in the hunt to add more hardware to his collection.

Rosa, The Ring's No. 9-rated junior-flyweight contender, hopes to face a fellow Caribbean titlist and has an idea for it to happen this summer.

"I'd like to fight again in July, unifying against Puerto Rican WBO champion René Santiago," Rosa (8-0, 2 KOs) told The Ring through his promoter Belgica Peña. "We've had conversations, but nothing has been finalized yet, although I'd love to be part of The Ring's July 12 date in New York."

Previously Rosa, who won the WBA Interim and regular strawweight title, had been zeroing in on consolidating the title but was unable to get then WBA (Super) titleholder Knockout CP Freshmart into the ring. The Dominican challenger was even in Thailand, only for the fight to be cancelled at late notice because of visa issues.

"Unfortunately, that put a pause on my career at a good time," he said of the 20-month hiatus from boxing. "I never thought about retirement. My promoter found a solution where we had new opportunities in this other weight class and now, I think it was all worth it."

"Mini Pac Man" put on three-pounds and took himself to junior flyweight where he won the WBA title in his second fight at the weight by besting Neider Valdez (UD12) in December.

"I've felt great since my body has developed," he said of his maturation. "I'm 25 years old, and I think I can last about three years before [moving up and] winning the 112-pound world title and becoming the first Dominican to hold the world championships in three different weight classes."

The junior flyweight division is primed for someone to come along and become the No. 1. We've seen long-reigning unified champion Kenshiro Teraji move to flyweight and earlier this year, his former rival Masamichi Yabuki did similar.

"I was Kenshiro's mandatory challenger, but he moved up in weight and we couldn't face each other," he said. "I think that No. 1 spot is mine, so I intend to unify.

"Santiago's a good fighter, but I don't think he's at my level, and beating Santiago would add another milestone to my career by becoming a unified champion."
