For a long time, Terence Crawford wanted to prove that he was the best of his era. By and large, Crawford got his point across thanks to world title runs in four different weight classes, including two undisputed trips. Now, it’s all about proving that he deserves to be in the G.O.A.T discussion.
Making another undisputed run at 154 pounds would’ve been lovely but there isn’t a single junior middleweight that Crawford wouldn’t be favored over. So in essence, he would be expected to aggregate those five major titles and rule over the division.
It isn’t that he finds that boring but the 37-year-old wants a challenge. He also wants to accomplish something that would give him a ton of credit.
A win over Canelo Alvarez would do just that. Crawford, as long as Alvarez takes out William Scull on DAZN PPV, will face him this coming September. Most observers are interested in seeing whether or not Crawford can get it done. Jaron Ennis is in that same boat.
The odds are stacked against Crawford but Ennis isn’t completely counting him out. He does, however, believe that he can make things easier on himself if he takes certain steps in preparation.
“I think Crawford should take a warm-up fight at like 160,” said Ennis to Fight Hub TV. “Just to get his body the feeling of somebody a little bit bigger. I think he should just go stay sharp.”
Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) and activity don’t exactly go hand in hand nowadays. For the last five years, he’s fought just once annually. Rust though, doesn’t seem to penetrate his game. Against Alvarez, nevertheless, things could be different.
If you hear the heavy banging sounds in the distance, it’s likely coming from the dumbbells Crawford has been lifting lately.
Putting on muscle and size will aid him on his 14-pound jump but Ennis doesn’t believe it’ll be enough. Considering who he’s fighting and how deleterious he’s been looking, Crawford may have a painful night at the office come September.
“I think you gotta lean more towards Canelo,” continued Ennis. “He been putting big guys down and out. He been hurting these guys. Those guys be way bigger than him come fight night.”
