Emma Dolan willing to travel to Mexico for chance to make history
Emma Dolan insists she is ready to pack her bags and become the first British boxer to win a world title on Mexican soil for half a century.

The 27-year-old is mandatory for the IBF junior bantamweight title held by Mexico City native Irma Garcia (25-5-1, 5 KOs) and there is every chance she will have to travel to get her shot.

But although Dolan (8-0, 1 KO) had hoped to secure home advantage for the clash, she told The Ring that the experience of winning a world title in Mexico, which no female boxer from Britain has ever done, would make it extra special.

“That would be a proper experience wouldn’t it?” Dolan said. “Going to Mexico to beat a Mexican would take some topping.

“The money would not be great and maybe it would not get the same exposure as being on a show over here would but overall, I’d be more than happy to go to Mexico to do it.

“I’d go to the ring wearing a sombrero and everything. You’d basically not get paid anything to do it but it would be memories I’d never forget.”

Following the IBF’s order for the pair to fight, both teams are currently in a period of negotiation regarding the contest. If no agreement is reached, purse bids are set for November 15.

“Those talks are ongoing,” Dolan added. “My manager Carl [Greaves] has had a few chats with various promoters about it so we will see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

“Then really I hope we can have the fight at the back end of December and if not then early next year. I’m in the gym now just getting ready to turn the key and knuckle down properly once we know the date.”

Mexico is not a traditionally happy hunting ground for UK boxers and you have to go back to December 1975 for the last time a Brit won a world title fight there.

That was the night underdog John H Stracey produced one of the most famous away victories in British boxing history as he got up off the floor in the first round to stop the great Jose Napoles in the sixth round of their encounter at Monumental Plaza de Toros in Mexico City.

Incidentally, that venue is only around an hour from where Garcia grew up and eventually tried her hand at boxing. The 44-year-old had her first professional fight back in 2010 and is considered one of the most experienced champions in women’s boxing having won titles at two weights.

“I think Irma has been a good champion but she’s 44 now,” Dolan said. “I’m 27, I’m on my way up, I’m hungry and I’m ready for it.

“I want to grab this opportunity with both hands and I know what I’m up against. She fights like a standard Mexican, she’s very flat-footed and she throws in bursts.

“I just need to stick to my boxing and I think I’ll be sound. She’s a southpaw so I’ve been sparring some of them to make sure I know what to expect.”

Unbeaten Dolan is yet to put a foot wrong over the course of her career and has racked up victories over domestic rivals Nicola Hopewell, Shannon Ryan and Lauren Parker over the last two years. That trio had just one defeat between them but were all on the end of points defeats to Norwich-born Dolan, who now fights out of Newark.

She is now hoping that winning the world title will provide her more opportunities on the big stage.

“I like to think I’m an entertaining fighter,” she added. “If I had the right promoter behind me I could be in some really good fights.

“I’ve got the light at the end of the tunnel with this world title fight and then I can bring that belt back. I’m ready to step and see how good I am. I believe I’m world level and this is my chance to prove it.

“Then I can come back home and make my first defence back in Britain.”
