The Ring's junior featherweight champion
Ellie Scotney has welcomed a fight with Skye Nicolson — if the Australian wins the WBA 122-lb title first.
Scotney is putting the finishing touches on her camp ahead of
July 11’s unification clash with Mexico’s Yamileth Mercado.
If the 27-year-old from Catford wins, she will add the WBC title to her collection, which includes the WBO and IBF belts as well as the Ring title.
Scotney has been linked with a move up to featherweight in the past but is adamant she is capable of staying down at 122lbs until she upholds a long-held promise to her late nan Eileen to "collect all the belts" and become undisputed champion.
Should she be successful against Mercado, Scotney will only require the WBA title to complete her goal. That is currently held by another Mexican, Mayelli Flores Rosquero, who won the title via a hard-fought split decision victory over Nazarena Romero in May.
Since
losing her WBC belt to Tiara Brown in March, Nicolson has announced she will be dropping down to junior featherweight and will make her debut in the new division on July 5 in Manchester.
And, when asked whether
Nicolson is now in her sights, Scotney said she will be a viable opponent on one condition.
“Do I have a new contender in Skye Nicolson? Well I’ve got the biggest fight of my career ahead of me and I’m on the path to undisputed," she told
The Ring.
“That means I will be moving on to fight the champion only. If she's got her hands on a belt, then, yeah, that's someone I'll be looking to fight. But I'm only looking to fight champions.
“I'm that close to undisputed now. We used to always joke around with my nan that I've got to complete the collection and my eyes are set on that.
“God willing, I can do it in two more fights starting on July 11 and after that I'll be chasing the titles above, whoever has got it.”
