LONDON — The wheels are in motion for The Ring's junior featherweight champion
Ellie Scotney to land her dream undisputed title fight before the end of 2025.
The undefeated star has claimed The Ring, WBO, WBC and IBF titles in just 11 fights as a professional since turning over in 2020.
The only missing piece of the jigsaw is the WBA title held by Mexico’s
Mayelli Flores Rosquero, who claimed the belt via a hard-fought 10-round decision against defending champion Nazarena Romero in May.
Now talks are already underway to match Scotney and Flores Rosquero, The Ring's No. 3-rated junior featherweight, in a showdown for all the belts later this year — and they are understood to be progressing well.
Scotney, along with a number of other high profile women, has signed a deal with
Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions who delivered her the Mercado unification for her first fight under the banner.
And now it looks like her second outing with MVP could be the undisputed fight she has always dreamed of.
“She is definitely going to get out before the end of the year,” her trainer Shane McGuigan told
The Ring.
“She's contractually obliged to get out before the end of the year and the plan is to fight Flores next for undisputed.
“We have always planned on becoming undisputed as quickly as possible and I think the opponent is being quite reasonable with her price. So hopefully we can get that staged before the end of the year.”
Scotney’s one-sided victory over Mercado took place at Madison Square Garden as part of a huge all-women event headlined by Katie Taylor’s victory over Amanda Serrano in their trilogy bout.
It is unclear whether Scotney, from Catford, England, will get home advantage against Flores although it seems unlikely it will land on the
Paul-Gervonta Davis undercard, McGuigan said.
“Jake Paul against Tank is November 14 in Atlanta but I think they might have allocated all the undercard slots already,” he added. “So it could be in December.
“[MVP co-founder] Nakisa Bidarian is in town next week so we will then figure out where we go.
“It would be great if they could stage a show in the UK because they’ve got a lot of fighters from over here who need to get out.”
Should Scotney add the WBA belt to her collection in 2025 it would cap a remarkable year for the 27-year-old who had struggled for momentum with her previous promoters Matchroom.
She boxed only once in 2024 but beat Mea Motu in January before seeing off Mercado in July.
“Just look at how stagnant her career was before,” McGuigan said. “It was stop-start.
“She's just often had an unfortunate set of circumstances where fights have been knocked back or there have been injuries to her or her opponent and fights have been cancelled.
“So it'd be great to get some momentum out of that and actually get her out three times in the one year.”
On Flores Rosquero (13-1-1, 4 KOs), McGuigan added: “Well she throws about 1,000 punches in every fight so it’s not going to be an easy night, that’s for sure.”
