Edgar Berlanga has to make a mandatory pit stop on Saturday before more desired destinations materialize when he faces Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in the last fight of his Matchroom Boxing deal.
Fresh off a spirited unanimous decision loss to Canelo Alvarez, Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) was anticipating a homecoming fight in Puerto Rico but is instead getting a lackluster co-main event slot at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, providing chief support much to his chagrin to the middleweight matchup between Austin Williams and Patrice Volny.
The fellow Boriqua Gonzalez-Ortiz (20-0-1, 16 KOs) falls severely short, however, of the top-tier competition the power-punching super middleweight contender seeks now that he has the luster from an Alvarez fight.
“My hit list is Jaime Munguia, Caleb Plant, and Jermall Charlo,” Berlanga told The Ring in an interview. “Those are the ones we are looking at. To end the year with a bang. I’m going to go to Saudi Arabia to see the Munguia fight on May 3. He has to get his loss back against Bruno Surace. That's a big mega fight for us.”
Gonzalez-Ortiz, a 35-year-old from Puerto Rico, returned to boxing last year after a decade-long hiatus and has no remarkable wins on his resume.
“I'm gonna sweep this guy, pound him, and get him out of there early so that we can move on to bigger and better things,” said Berlanga, The Ring’s No. 9 rated super middleweight. “It's all gas, no brakes from here on out, selling out stadiums, and becoming a superstar in the sport.”
