Edgar Berlanga failed to make weight Friday for his first fight since his loss to Canelo Alvarez six months ago.
The super middleweight contender stepped on the Florida Athletic Commission’s scale at 169.6 pounds, 1½ over the contracted super middleweight limit of 168 for his 10-round bout Saturday night against Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz. Berlanga paid a five-figure sum to Gonzalez-Ortiz and the Florida Athletic Commission to move forward with a co-feature DAZN will stream from Caribe Royale Orlando in Orlando, Florida.
Puerto Rico’s Gonzalez-Ortiz met his contractual obligation by officially weighing in at 167.4 pounds. Only Gonzalez-Ortiz is eligible to win the NABO super middleweight title, one of the WBO’s regional belts, because Berlanga was overweight.
Brooklyn’s Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) is listed by DraftKings sportsbook as an 18-1 favorite versus Gonzalez-Ortiz, a fellow Puerto Rican.
Gonzalez-Ortiz is undefeated (20-0-1, 16 KOs), but he has mostly competed in the junior middleweight and middleweight divisions. The San Juan native also spent nearly 10 years in prison for armed robbery, which prevented him from fighting from May 2014 until March 2024.
Berlanga, 27, hopes to bounce back from his one-sided, 12-round, unanimous-decision defeat to Alvarez on September 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Mexico’s Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) knocked Berlanga to the canvas with a left hook in the third round, but Berlanga exhibited toughness by making it to the final bell against an experienced, elite-level four-division champion.
Earlier Friday, a 10-round rematch between American welterweight Jalil Hackett and Puerto Rico’s Jose Vazquez was scratched from Saturday’s undercard because Hackett sprained his ankle after exiting a sauna while trying to lose weight. Hackett was on crutches when he told FightHype.com that he intends to reschedule his second fight against Vazquez as soon as possible.
Vazquez (14-1, 6 KOs) upset Washington, D.C.’s Hackett (9-1, 7 KOs), who was once promoted by Floyd Mayweather, by split decision in a 10-rounder December 7 at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan.
Below are the official weights for the remaining six bouts on the abovementioned card.
