Edgar Berlanga’s bizarre fashion choice, a ninja mask, hid his face during a press conference Thursday in Orlando, Florida.
The brash super middleweight contender had much more difficulty hiding his low opinion of Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz, Berlanga’s opponent Saturday night on the Austin “Ammo” Williams-Patrice Volny undercard. Gonzalez-Ortiz, a fellow Puerto Rican, is unbeaten, but he has fought just twice since May 2014, in part because he spent time in prison before the San Juan native resumed his once-promising boxing career a year ago.
Gonzalez-Ortiz of course views Berlanga as just the type of established 168-pound opponent he needs to upset to rejuvenate his career, which consists mostly of middleweight and junior middleweight fights. Berlanga, an 18-1 favorite according to DraftKings, dismissed the mere thought of such an occurrence during his interview with Matchroom Boxing’s Justin Shackil after he stepped off the stage Thursday at Caribe Royale Orlando.
“This is something light here, man,” Berlanga said. “You know, I don’t overlook no opponent, but this is a cakewalk for me. You know what I’m saying? I been at the highest heights of the mountain, you know what I’m saying, my last fight. And I took it very well. I handled it very well. So, this is, you know, something light for me right now. You know what I’m saying? I gotta go in there and I just gotta perform and do what I gotta do.”
Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) did better than expected when he challenged Canelo Alvarez for his Ring, IBO, WBA, WBC and WBO 168-pound championships in his last fight September 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez’s left hook knocked Berlanga to the canvas in the third round, but a stubborn Berlanga made it to the final bell.
He will fight for the first time since Guadalajara’s Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) beat him by unanimous decision in their 12-rounder six months ago. Promoter Eddie Hearn intended to have Berlanga headline a show in San Juan this past Saturday night, but they couldn’t agree on an appropriate opponent for a main event DAZN would’ve streamed.
That disagreement is at the root of why Berlanga will compete in the co-feature of a card topped by Williams after battling boxing’s biggest star in a pay-per-view main event in his last fight.
Berlanga hopes an impressive performance against Gonzalez-Ortiz (20-0-1, 16 KOs) leads to a fight against another opponent Alvarez defeated, Mexico’s Jaime Munguia, if the former WBO junior middleweight champ avenges his stunning six-round knockout loss to light-punching Frenchman Bruno Surace. Tijuana’s Munguia (44-2, 30 KOs) and Marseille’s Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) are scheduled to meet in an immediate rematch May 3 on the Alvarez-William Scull undercard at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The Ring ranks Scull fifth, Surace seventh, Munguia eighth and Berlanga ninth in its super middleweight top 10.
“I got three names,” Berlanga said. “I got a hit list, but right now I’m looking at Munguia, Jaime. Hopefully he wins [May] 3rd. Caleb Plant and [Jermall] Charlo. You know, these are the type of fights I wanna make in New York. I feel like those three fights deserve to be at the Barclays Center or Madison Square Garden. You know what I’m saying? I’m big New York.”
Milwaukee’s Williams (17-1, 12 KOs) and Montreal’s Volny (19-1, 13 KOs) will square off in the main event, a 10-round middleweight match, after Berlanga boxes Gonzalez-Ortiz. DAZN’s undercard coverage is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. ET.
