Edgar Berlanga-Jonathan Gonzalez Ortiz Added To March 15 DAZN Show In Orlando
Edgar Berlanga will come as close to the full experience of fighting in Puerto Rico without actually being on the island.

Matchroom Boxing confirmed that the former title challenger has been added to the already announced March 15 DAZN show. Berlanga, The Ring’s No. 9 super middleweight, will face Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in an all-Boricua battle at Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) will fight for the first time since a failed title bid against The Ring/unified super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Their Sept. 14 Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Prime Pay-Per-View headliner saw Alvarez win by scores of 118-109, 118-109 and 117-110 to defend his crown.

The lone career defeat for Berlanga—a Brooklyn-bred Boricua—was expected to be followed up with a March 8 DAZN headliner in Puerto Rico. No official announcement ever came from the scenario, however, prior to Monday’s reveal that Berlanga would instead return to the heavily populated Orlando region.

Gonzalez (20-0-1, 16 KOs) appeared at this very venue in his last fight, a seventh-round knockout of Eduard Ulloa last June 8.

It marked just the second fight into his comeback following a ten-year hiatus. The 35-year-old middleweight from San Juan hadn’t fought since 2014 prior to his return last March. Gonzalez will now move up in weight for by far the biggest challenge of his career.

Berlanga will fight at Caribe Royale for the second time in just over a year and the fifth time overall fighting in the Orlando-Kissimmee area. His last fight at this location was against another unbeaten foe in Padraig McCrory, who was 18-0 prior to Berlanga’s sixth-round knockout win in their Feb. 24 DAZN main event.

The win saw Berlanga pick up his first win inside the distance since 2020, when he scored his 16th consecutive—and final—first-round knockout.

He was extended the distance in five straight fights, beginning with an April 2021 eight-round win over Demond Nicholson at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida. Berlanga fought in the co-feature slot but was still the biggest draw on a card loaded with Puerto Rican fighters.

More competitive action is expected in the other two confirmed bouts on the show.

Middleweight contenders Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams (17-1, 12 KOs) and Patrice Volny (19-1, 13 KOs) meet in a scheduled 12-round main event. The card also features the pro debut of locally based 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Omari Jones, who faces Alessio Mastronunzio (14-5, 4 KOs) in a six-round junior middleweight contest.
