Edgar Berlanga hasn’t always been a talker but he’s recently found his voice.

There was something about being on the same stage as Canelo Alvarez that empowered him. Performing well under those circumstances emboldened him. But, it wasn’t just his performance or the slick words he used during press conferences.

Alvarez is universally loved and adored. So, it wasn’t surprising to see the Las Vegas crowd cheer him on. Berlanga, subsequently was booed for 36 consecutive minutes. But, when the final bell rang, he was applauded for his efforts.

Nowadays, Berlanga notices that he’s the talk of the super middleweight town. Caleb Plant wants to knock his head off. Diego Pacheco wants to prove that he’s a far better fighter, and Jaime Munguia would love to add another chapter to the Puerto Rico vs. Mexico rivalry.

Unlike most, Berlanga won’t need to get on the phone and discuss his future plans with a promoter. With the highly ranked 168-pounder free from any promotional chains, he wants it to stay that way. Is there any trepidation from flying solo? Not at all. From his point of view, he already has everything he needs.

“It’s not about a promoter,” said Berlanga to FightHype.com. “It’s just about getting the right fights, having the right team, and I got that. I feel like I got the best team in boxing right now. The strongest team.”

That team that Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) is alluding to, were incredibly proud of his performance last weekend as he axed Jonathan Gonzalez in the first round in Orlando, Florida.

That win didn’t exactly move the needle but considering the amount of fans that came out to support him, along with the constant call-outs from his peers, and Berlanga is completely convinced that his star power is through the roof.

“I’m a big name in the sport right now,” continued Berlanga. “I sell, I got an island behind me, I got Puerto Rico with me. I got the whole world that’s with me.”
