Eddie Hearn: 'Pound For Pound, Conor Benn Beats Chris Eubank Jr. Every Day Of The Week'
Eddie Hearn did his best to turn a blind eye to it, but he knew his man was at a disadvantage.
The rivalry shared between Chris Eubank Sr. and Nigel Benn is revered like few others. However, while they’re intrinsically linked, it appeared as though their sons, Chris. Jr. and Conor, wouldn’t be able to carry it on. Most, if not all of it, was due to their size difference.
But, with Benn willing to move up to the middleweight division, Eubank Jr.'s territory, they continued the tradition.
Last weekend, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Eubank Jr. and Benn got it on. During the first few rounds, Benn’s youth and speed gave him the edge. But, as the rounds trudged along, Benn (23-1, 14 KOs) began slowing down as Eubank’s guile, experience, power and work rate proved to be too much, leading to a close win on the scorecards.
. He and Eubank will need several months to recover, but all signs point to them running things back.
If a rematch is inevitable, several things could change. One thing that won’t, however, is the weight class. With Benn already giving up plenty in that department, paired with Eubank struggling on the scales, 160 seems like the perfect target for both.
Hearn won’t sit around and complain about it. Would he like Benn to be fighting much closer to 147 pounds? Without question. But, the way he sees it, Eubank needs the size advantage. If he didn’t have one, their fight wouldn’t be even remotely close.
“Pound for pound, Conor Benn beats Chris Eubank Jr. every day of the week,” said Hearn on Boxing News during a recent interview. “But, moving up two divisions and fighting him, it’s a 50/50 fight. That’s exactly what we saw, a super competitive fight.”
