Eddie Hearn has not ruled out working with IBF junior welterweight champion
Richardson Hitchins once again but is yet to make an offer for his next fight.
The pair had a well-publicised spat in the aftermath of Hitchins’
eighth-round stoppage of George Kambosos at Madison Square Garden Theater on June 14.
In the ring during his post-fight interview, the 27-year-old New Yorker declared that he was a free agent after coming to the end of his contract with Matchroom, the promoters of the show in Manhattan.
Hearn
did not take kindly to the timing and levelled the blame at what he described as "bloodsuckers and snakes" in Hitchins’ team.
Now the dust has settled on the situation. Hitchins,
The Ring’s No. 1 at 140 pounds, does not have his next fight booked and is free to discuss his plans with any promoter.
The moment still rankles with Hearn who insists he and Matchroom lost money on promoting Hitchins, whose last five fights have been under his banner. However, when asked whether that bridge has been burned for good, Hearn said: “No, I wouldn’t rule out working with him again in the future.
“We’ll see what happens. At the moment we haven’t made him an offer, but that could change.
“From my point of view, we had a little spat after the last fight and he got told what to say in the ring. I was very disappointed. You get over things, but I do find it difficult when you say, ‘I just want to thank you so much, you've completely changed my life but, by the way, I'm a free agent’. It just doesn't wash well with me.
“The main issue is that Richardson Hitchins has been a tough sell for a long time, but we've stuck our money in and we've never faltered. Now he's got to the championship, it still requires significant investment and significant money and it just leaves a bit of a bad taste in your mouth. But it doesn't mean we won't do business moving forward.
“We will see what happens in the next couple of weeks, but he is a free agent.”
Although Hearn indicates he is willing to forgive, he may not totally forget the public fall-out.
He added: “Fighters have to get the best deal for themselves, but right now we are one of two who have a TV contract in America. We are in a pretty good position.
"We have all these fighters from other promotional companies that want to join Matchroom and
DAZN so we’ve got to choose wisely and right now we have no obligation to Richardson Hitchins.
“And I don’t really want to represent someone who wants to go out and see what else is on offer then come back and say, 'Maybe.' I want people who want to be with Matchroom. When I know that I will work my nuts off to get you the best opportunities.
“I think with our credentials and our current position in the market that we're an outstanding choice. So I find it actually quite offensive when you even want to talk to someone else.
"We have to choose wisely, but let’s see what happens.”
