Cristobal Lorente's inspired second-half showing saw him salvage a draw to retain his European featherweight title against
Nathaniel Collins at Glasgow's Braehead Arena, Scotland on October 4.
The EBU have since moved to appoint former European junior featherweight titleholder
Liam Davies as Lorente's official challenger.
However, that doesn't have to come next. The Spaniard can make a voluntary defence in the interim but must face Davies within a six-to-nine month timeframe.
Lorente has made three defences since winning the title last July. Interestingly, Davies like Collins is also promoted by Frank Warren's Queensberry Promotions. The 29-year-old Englishman (17-1, 8 KOs) fought much of his career at 122-pounds.
However after suffering the lone defeat of his seven-year pro stint against old amateur rival
Shabaz Masoud last November, he elected to head four-pounds north to featherweight where he returned to winning ways with a
12-round decision win over Kurt Walker in May.
Meanwhile, Lorente (20-0-3, 8 KOs) has been a professional since 2016.
He fought the first 19 fights of his career at home in Spain before capturing the EBU title with a 12-round majority decision win over Mauro Forte in Albania, before edging past Francesco Grandelli with a points victory in Italy.
The 29-year-old struggled with countryman and relative novice Ruben Gil (D 12) on July 5 before showing resilience in enemy territory but ultimately drawing with WBC's No. 1-rated contender Collins earlier this month.
