Gervonta Davis and
Jake Paul are set to
square off in what evidently will be an exhibition Nov. 14 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta on Netflix, it was announced on Wednesday.
Most Valuable Promotions didn’t reveal how it would handle the massive weight difference, the number of rounds or the rules by which the boxers will exchange punches. The only thing that's clear is the long-planned matchup is coming to fruition.
The development was immediately met with a mixed bag of reactions, with welterweight star Ryan Garcia leading the charge. He slammed the event.
“You are supposed to believe that it's a fair fight?” Ryan Garcia said on social media. “If you know anything about boxing, you can see it's a disgrace. The integrity of the sport is getting ruined everyday. Boxing is officially the WWE.
“This just proves that the new blueprint is to be popular and be a decent fighter. If you are an up-and-coming fighter, I’d just focus on strictly building your name. Pick fights to win that give you advantages and continue to [rake] in money.”
Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) last fought at cruiserweight in June, when he weighed in at 199½ pounds for his
unanimous decision victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Paul was pursuing a fight in recent weeks against former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua that never came to be.
Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) is the WBA lightweight champion. He appeared headed toward a summer rematch against Lamont Roach Jr. following their controversial majority draw in March. But the clash never crossed the finish line after planned dates of June 21 and August 16 were derailed.
Davis was also arrested for alleged domestic violence on July 11, but the charges were dropped last week.
Once the Davis-Paul pact was revealed, Roach shared several emojis of a duck on social media and said, “Told ya.”
Garcia, who suffered a 2023 knockout loss to Davis and is friendly with Paul, is pessimistic about the terms of the tilt.
“By the way, if the fight does happen, I’d bet on the heavyweight,” said Garcia. “I strongly doubt this happens, no way Gervonta accepted 195 pounds. Gervonta is already small naturally, and you really think he will decide to balloon up to 195 pounds. You have to be delusional to think this is going to happen.”
