Diego Pacheco couldn’t help but think he should’ve been the fighter to humble
Edgar Berlanga.
Pacheco was always willing to battle Berlanga, but the undefeated super middleweight contender never felt like there were serious discussions about that match materializing. Now that
Hamzah Sheeraz spectacularly took out the brash Brooklyn native, Pacheco has turned his attention toward a potential fight with an emerging star in his deep division.
“Sheeraz, after looking great and knocking Berlanga out, he got a lotta recognition here in the U.S.," Pacheco told
The Ring. “I think a fight with him would be huge here in the States, in Saudi or even in the UK. I think that would be a really big fight. And honestly, I see that as one of the best fights in the division right now.”
Los Angeles’
Pacheco (24-0, 18 KOs) must first conquer Cameroonian contender Kevin Lele Sadjo (26-0, 23 KOs) in a 12-round main event
DAZN will stream worldwide Saturday night from Adventist Health Arena in Stockton, California. DAZN’s coverage of the main portion of the undercard is set to begin at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT).
England’s Sheeraz (22-0-1, 18 KOs) doesn’t have his next fight set, but neither he nor Pacecho appear to be potential opponents for undefeated, undisputed super middleweight champ
Terence Crawford.
Sheeraz is ranked No. 2 by the WBO, however, one spot atop Pacheco.
Canelo Alvarez is ranked No. 1 and has expressed interest in an immediate rematch with Crawford, who beat the Mexican superstar by unanimous decision September 13.
If the WBO 168-pound championship becomes vacant, though, Sheeraz and Pacheco could be ordered to fight for it, assuming they maintain their rankings.
Pacheco, 24, is ranked fifth in
The Ring’s top 10 at super middleweight. Sheeraz, 26, is rated eighth.
Pacheco commended Sheeraz for his impressive performance against Berlanga (23-2, 18 KOs). Sheeraz dropped him twice in the fourth round and stopped him early in the fifth round July 12 in the main event of “The Ring IV” in New York.
“My first thought was, 'That should’ve been me,' because I knew Berlanga was never that special,” Pacheco said. “I knew that it was only a matter of time until he fought a good fighter and that exact thing happened, like it did. ... Sheeraz is the guy I wanna go after now.”
